Title: Dornier 27 (Special Hobby 1/72)
Post by: draken35 on August 19, 2018, 03:13:42 PM
Time to prepare the next builds as I've finished the Rafale M and I'm finishing the "cute" Corsair...
This is the Dornier 27 from Special Hobby at 1/72 scale.
Nice kit; hope the build will be fun...
Of course, I will build the Belgian version  :))

Friends from the Brussels Air Museum helped me for what concerns the seatbelts... I think I will use Eduard's LW seatbelts as a base. ANyway, I'm in the first stage, prepairing the cockpit interior (and the engine interior) for base primer...

At the request of Didier Waelkens from IPMS-Belgium who asks me to finish the kit before december (for an article for KIT, the IPMS-Belgium magazine), I will concentrate my actual hobby time on the Dornier 27.

I've removed the clear parts from the sprue. So doing, I've constated that the sprues made gaps on the doors... I've tried to correct that problem (sanding, three different grades of compound, klir) but impossible: it's too deep... I've sent a mail to Special Hobby asking for replacement parts. Anyway I can eventually build the kit with open doors: so doing the gaps will not be visible, but I prefer to build kits "all closed".

Today I've masked the clear parts on the cockpit. As I'm tired and hands are shaking too much, it's enough for one sitting...

Yesterday in the evening I've painted the light grey of the cockpit interior (Gunze H325) On the photos I received from my friends of the Brussels Air Museum (sorry, I don't have the autorisation to publish those photos) it's evident that the backseat is not the part 57 as indicated by Special Hobby on the instruction sheet, but part 62 like the German and Spanixh versions... So I've removed part 57 and replaced it by part 62.
The photos show also that there is an upholstery in the cockpit of the aircraft of the museum. It's too much work to do to realise that upholstery, so I will let the interior as is.
The photos show also that the grey color of the seat is slightly different from the rest of the cockpit; so I painted the seats with Gunze H326. The third photo shows the difference...

...This morning I have painted the little details and set the decal of the instrument panel, that is very nice.

Next phase: gloss varnish before some weathering

After having used some pastels, I've set the seatbelts and then tried to place the cockpit interior into the fuselage. Fitting was so good that no glued needed for the interior; I glued the 1/2 fuselages together...

Due to a big lack of time until the end of the year, I will not be able to finish the kit for mid-december. But I continue the build, on my rythm...
Today I've placed the lateral windows, painted the engine and applied some putty/cyano where needed... Work is not finished yet with putty but there is no real "big" problem...

Special Hobby sent me a new set of clear parts, on my request. Excellent customer service!!!
Same proble with the attachment of the doors on the sprue; so, I've gently sanded the new doors for a loooooong time... Result is good; I can build my Dornier "all closed". Me happy.
Motivated... I have masked the doors, airbrushed the inside color than glued all the clear parts with Gator glue. When dry I've placed the wing, then the wheel legs; engine face, and some other elements. Not finished yet but it was enough for today: placement of the (Belgian) exhausts was not a piece of cake because the parts are so tiny... Nerviously it was enough for today.
But well, I must say that Dornier is a very nice and pleasant to build kit!

Gator glue is useful. longer time to dry compared to cyano but no fumes; with cyano I had fumes on the dorsal window...

Since last time, I received lot of interresting informations and new pictures (I cannot publish those ones due to copyrights); that were a little bit disturbing for some ones...

Belgian pilots seats are not totally correct in the kit: backseats are not so high and there is no metal plate behind. The seatbelts are fixed on a kind of reinforcement in metal above the seats...

The banks are both the same with no full backseats as indicated by Special Hobby for the Belgian version; instead it's better to use the part of the German aircraft - but two are needed. More than that: Belgians reinforced the backseat with a grey tissue in the lower part...

The cockpit interior is capitoned...

There is a kind of wood wheel between the pilots seats

Belgian Do27 present some variations in the paint. This is due to the use of paint can to correct the overall paint before total re-painting of the aircraft

Exhausts: the short exhausts provided for Belgian version by SH are correct. But there were progressively replaced by longer ones; that are not of the same type of the German aircrafts! So, if you whish to represent Belgian longer exhausts, you have to scratchbuild them... I will keep the shorter ones.

Decals provided in the kit are a little bit too big. Not really dramatically too big I must say.

My friends of the Brussels Air Museum sent me informations about the lenght of the antennas: 50 cm and 225cm. At 1/72 scale, that makes respectively 0,7cm & 3,13cm.

OK. Knowing all that I was disturbed by the fact that my cockpit interior is not absolutely correct... I envisaged to stop the build of the actual kit, to begin my second one more correctly this time. Discussing with Didier Waelkens, editor of KIT (IPMS-Belgium magazine) he convinced me to continue my actual build; simply giving all the infos received after the closing of the cockpit in the article I will write.

So, the adventure continues  :))

Not a big step forward this time: photoetch! That asked me loooong time to perfectly realise the parts...

Yes, it's my intention but the second Dornier will not be one of my next builds...

As I have a few time to spend for the hobby actually, progress is slow... More than that, some phases are asking for intense thinking  :-green
So, even if the part is fragile, I decided to glue the VHF antenna on the wing. For me, that will be better for the painting phase.

I've also prepared the other antennas; there are not glued actually; just positionned for the photo ;)
