1/48 Monogram Fw 190D-11
« on: December 31, 2012, 03:06:56 PM »
Time to post progress and kit review on the old Monogram Fw 190 kit that's been under construction for the last few months. This was another kit that I purchased at an "antique" store locally. The kit had been opened but work was never started on it by the first owner. I actually began tinkering on this in September and simply did a little bit whenever I had spare time.

This Monogram Pro Modeler kit was actually produced from the old Trimaster molds and I found it to be pretty nicely detailed and molded. In fact, for being such an old kit (first released in 1988), I found it only slightly inferior to the modern Eduard Dora. One area of inaccuracy is the wheelwells--this kit represents the older wheel housings that seal off the engine accessory section. This should be removed and a scratchbuilt aft engine bay installed for total accuracy. Other than that it was a relaxing build. Here are a few photos--obviously this is one of the airfield protection machines of JV 44! The kit decals provide the option of Red 4 so this is the machine I'm building.

This kit lacks the PE fret that was originally contained in the Dragon/DML version. The manufacturer substituted a very delicate styrene fret in the place of the PE and this works very well also.

I had never built or owned either the Trimaster or Dragon/DML issues of this kit so only can speak from research I've done. I can say that the Monogram boxing is nice and should be less expensive for those searching for a sample.

Just like the year 2011, the last model from my workbench in 2012 was a long-nose Fw 190. It didn't get planned that way but that's how it turned out! I finished this in the last hour of the year and took some photos of it this morning. This was built almost entirely out-of-the-box and was pleasant to construct. The decals are also from the kit and were alright except for a little silvering on some of the small stencils.

A very peculiar colour scheme! Assume this was done to prevent the defending 'Dora's' being shot down by own flak. Is anyone aware of photographs of this interesting 'airfield defender'? Text on fuselage 'Der nächte Herr, die selbe Dame!' (next gentleman, same lady) is very suggestive!!

Nico,

There are several photos of the machines of this unit. They were attached as Platzschutzstaffel for JV 44, and if you search for "Papagei Staffel" quite a lot of information is out there. I found it interesting that the leader of the Fw 190 unit, Lt. Sachsenberg, is supposed to have said that he trusted any airplane with a propeller on it-- but not the jets!

Yes, the red/white undersides were to distinguish them to their local Flak protection. The operation of this unit was to take off and orbit at 1,000 feet looking for enemy fighters when the Me 262s were in the vicinity of the field or in the landing pattern.

This Staffel had four (possibly five) machines, a mix of D-9 and D-11. The airplane I built has been suspected of being Fw 190V-58, one of the prototype D-11s, according to research info I've found. This is the likely reason for the 58 under the red 4 on the fuselage. Each airplane had personal markings, so unusual at this late period.

Yes four machines in the red undersides--Red 1, 3 and 13 were D-9s and Red 4 was the D-11 in this thread.

Incidentally, just like the Eduard D-9 I built last year, there is a photo of the fuselage of Red 4 in a junkpile after the war.

The PE frets really are beautiful and include a lot of parts!

Thanks especially for the photos of the machine, the second one I had not seen.
