Model kit of a plane that didn't exist...
« on: December 26, 2008, 03:33:15 PM »
Hi all,  :-salut

Here are photos of a Lindberg kit that depicts a "MiG 19" in the 1956... That plane never existed in this form !
After the MiG 19 was well known, the kit was named "Russian Fighter". I saw it for the first time in 1956...

Aurora too, issued a little different "MiG 19" but I never got it.

Must say that they could not do better in regard to the spy images available in public in that time! This kit is real treasure to have it :) When did you built it?

Hi mate,

My first "MiG 19" of 1957 has been lost for about 40 years... I built this one in the 1992. From the box.

To be honest: this strange looking plane DID exist but it was only NOT a MIG design.
It was the unsuccessfull Sukhoi SU-15, and as we can see we can hardly regard this old kit as accurate!
I can remember Aurora also had in the late fifties a kit of a Russian 'Atomic bomber' that was in fact a very inaccurate model of the Myaschisev Bounder.

To be complete in this 'fighter that didn't exist' matter I must remark that also the MIG design bureua had a prototype for an all-weather fighter resembling the SU-15.
It was designated as I-320(R) and it even looked uglier than the Sukhoi design. As far as known, only 3 prototypes were built. Final type selected as an all-weather fighter was the Yak-25!

Hi mates,

From its dimensions, the Su 15 is far bigger than the 1/48 scale "MiG 19" from Lindberg which could represent the Su 15 in... 1/72 scale !

Following, the box cover of the Lindberg model :

Here is what I found on the net : "Russian MiG 19" from Aurora.
