Blohm und Voss BV 141 B
« on: July 12, 2014, 09:06:10 AM »
Hello everybody,  :-salut :-salut :-salut :-salut

Here is the project that I'm building : the BV 141 B by HiPM in 1/48 scale... I must say that it's an "infernal" kit.
As usual, the cockpit is first assembled and painted RLM 66:

After adding some details such as ammunition boxes belts behind the pilot seat. For better assembly the wing spar is added (It is a little ahead of the real location by 5 mm so that it goes through a fuel tank !):

The cockpit is made of two transparent halves moulded vertically... so that the seam is in the middle of some top windows... But the idea for transparent parts is good and windows must be masked for painting... taking a very long time.

But the worst of this kit is the wrong incidence of the wing making the nacelle to be too horizontal. The solution (Mine, indeed !) was to cut off the entire wing roots portion from the fuselage to reposition it.

And to saw along the wing roots on the belly to adapt this portion to the rest of the fusealge :

Gaps so obtained must be filled in :

Then the new portion is cemented to the fuselage and, with a lot of putty, the initial shape is restored...

Holes for the wing spar have been added :

The nacelle is now mounted onto the lower part of the cockpit :

But it's not perfect...

(To be continued)

Cheers,

Jicehem :-wave:-wave :-wave :-wave

Hi mate,

Thank you very much.
These two pictures show a Fw 189 but the error comes from the Bundes Archiv...

Cheers,

We continue...
Wings, nacelle and fuselage are now assembled and comes the building of the undercarriage. This kit has a big error but it is in general well detailed and needs only adding details difficultly reproduced in a kit.
Picture out of the notice :

The u/c in place (Not difficult to build):

The u/c leg scissors in plastic :

That in PE parts are not better :

I decided to improve those of the kit :

The tailwheel leg :

And now... the propeller. Bad enough particularly the shape of the blades. The diameter must be shortened by 2 mm to correspond with the VS 111 airscrew :

Then the engine.
HiPM offers a too simple representation with a non-realistic PE part :

I had to modify by adapting a spare engine coming from a Fw 190 A :

The PE ventilator doesn't look right :

It was replaced by a part from Dragon's Fw 190 A-8 :

Exhaust pipes have been relocated on the right places :

And, now, the kit before painting :

The last step...
Some details added to the u/c legs such as ducts :

The propeller has been more improved :

Drawing of the camo sheme from several photographs but without absolute proof because of very weary paints on the real "things" :

Masking for RLM 71 color :

At the last minute before painting, I corrected or added (after a photo...) some détails :

The first color is applied :

Then, RLM 70 in the way the two colors are juxtaposed :

The result for today, because I'm short of RLM 65 color... :

I'm always searching for the definite markings. One or two Bv 141 B-0 have sported a yellow band around the aft fuselage. I suspect that BV 141 B-01, NC+QZ was one and the other might have been NC+RE, which photo but still without the band at BV factory :

The two pictures which I know of BV 141 with yellow band. It's impossible to read the Skz...  :-wall
The first (of very bad quality) which I suppose is deliberately a very contrasted photocopy :

The second photo where the plane is hidden... This is the second...

After entire painting is finished I'll add last details such as step :

and aileron balance :

Now, for those interested in the BV 141 production, here is the list of complete A and B series :

A last note :
A BV 141 B is announced by Trumpeter/Hobbyboss in 1/48 scale. If they have not corrected the kit, the propeller will have a wrong rotation direction :
The kit :

The real thing :

Your work is great and kit demand a lot of tuning to get into proper shape. it is funny to see that somebody can make so bad error like propeller direction...

Thank you mate.
Yes, the error with the propeller by Trumpeter/Hobbyboss is a pity because the kit seems to be well detailed althoug aileron balances are lacking...

BV 141B has been many years ago subject of an Airfix 1/72 kit.
Also here propeller is made to turn in the incorrect way.
I Built it some 30 years ago straight from the box without being too critical on the points mentioned above.
Think the model builder of today is much more fanatical on correct details than 30 years ago!
Since the V-series were quite different machines I hope to see also here in the future model kits!
