One of the few variants of the 109 I haven't accomplished is a G-12 trainer. Years ago I bought a Falcon Models kit and set it aside for a later time. I pulled it off the shelf this weekend and it is a VERY short-run style kit. It can certainly be built, but for now I'm going to convert this old Hasegawa G-2 into a two-seater using one of the canopies that comes in the Falcon kit.

I'll take a few photos of the Falcon kit and give a "mini-review" of it in unbuilt form. I can say it has a really nice offering of decal choices that I am excited to use.

I scratch-built the instructor's cockpit area with styrene sheet and strips for the right cockpit wall. The left wall, seat, rear bulkheads, rudder pedals and control stick all came from my extensive collection of Bf 109 spare parts! Then a little RLM 66.

This is the last Hasegawa Gustav in my collection. It really is simple, but so was the real airplane!

Progress, the cockpits were done and halves joined last night with a nice refreshment and I finished main assembly today. Then, primer stage (with the "big brother") . I've also gotten brave and cut the front and rear hinged portions from the vacuform canopy enclosure.

Here's a separate post showing the Falcon kit that started this all:
As you can see, the casting method is definitely short-run with heavy pour-stubs on all the parts. The detail on the parts is not really too bad and this kit can be built with some extra work. However, the fuselage is too long forward of the wing and that needs to be shortened a bit. My favorite parts of the kit are the canopies (two provided) and the decal sheet and markings choices.

It's good that they are so different in size or I could have done a "hybrid" interceptor!

Also, I could be farther along with the Messerschmitt and Convair projects but I've also been working on this--the transmission on our old Jetta is acting up and I must replace all the shifting solenoids.

This project is now at the painting phase, slowly but surely.....
Since there are so many interesting markings choices on the decal sheet I ended up flipping a coin between my two favorites. I'll build the other favorite choice with the next one.

Thanks for the encouragement, mates--here are a few photos of the finished G-12.
I must say the old kit decals worked wonderfully with one exception. The registration letters under the 27 were actually smaller than the ones that come in the kit so I dug out my sheets of German letters and substituted.

Thank you! It was a fun distraction to build this one and I still have another canopy and other trainer-specific parts for another. Perhaps the second one I'll use an Eduard kit.
