We were visiting amongst ourselves on another thread and decided it might be nice to start a long-term Group Build for any and all versions of the Messerschmitt Bf-109 and offspring. All scales, all machines, all nationalities........this should be fun! :-jump As far as I am concerned we can work on this project at our leisure and we should keep it open for a l o n g time. I'm thinking it might be nice to make this a sticky topic in the future if we have enough response. Ideas?
Here are my four current/future projects, two restorations of Gustavs and the two Emils I recently purchased.

If we do this I'll learn something about the '109, like I do on every other LLL topic! :-salut
-
All right, all right, I will jump in :-ok
-
Here is my start kit- new Airfix kit in 1/72 scale, powered by Eduard etched parts.
-
Great!! :-clap :-clap
-
No time for this bird now, but in future there'll be some E/F/Gs, since I plan to build VVKJ, Gallands and Bars machines...
When, don't have any idea for now :-think
I'll follow up your builds anyway :-jump
-
We may very well make this thread a sticky, Profa--then you may jump in easily when time allows. I can't really start any of mine right now either with every other thing I have to do.
-
Well- in meantime many new Group Build will be run so who will be back on this build. Just my opinion, in general I did not see that anybody re open old GB for his kit. But time will give answer.
-
Well, it's a promising GB but actually for me, not time enough... :(
-
It will be here when your time allows, draken!
-
Uuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhh :-kr :-kr :-kr :-bat :-bat :-bat :-danger :-danger :-danger
I can't believe that Airfix manage to make this scum in the 21. century!! All right- empty, cockpit, this can be solved. Small number of part- no problem, easy assembly. But- oleo leg injected as one part with landing gear door as well propeller out of any match with real thing and even more reversed!!!!
:-evil :-evil :-evil
All right... I will build this kit strait of the box. No way to use any of Eduard parts inside, this is better to use with any other kit then in this one. Sorry my friends- you do not deserve to see thats kits but I just to torn it away from me and start after to built any normal kit of Bf109...
This images are made in short built time.
-
I decided that since I started the thread I had to do something...... Here are my two rebuilds, first the cockpit of the Gustav with all the storage dirt still in place:
Then, the F torn down, followed by the "box-o-parts" containing all of the G and the little pieces of the F. I never did find one gear leg for the F so I just made a mold of the other side with some extra RTV left over from another pour.
-
@Scott
You have full hands of work! :) :-tri
@Srecko
You kit is the same trash like mine Mirage III. There is no cockpit, small number of parts, shape is very questionable, and small chance correct. It is important that they put inside the pilot. :-kr :-wall :-wall :-bat
-
Everything could be correct but I don't want to waste time. Heller kit in 1/72 scale is all right for any update but not this one
-
Yes, the inside view of the fuselage halves reminds me of the kits of the early sixties :-wise, not today!
-
Yes, the inside view of the fuselage halves reminds me of the kits of the early sixties :-wise, not today!
... and I could accept that but at least all part at descent level molded and accurate!!
-
I had a few questions about my 1/48 E kit but it is much better than the thing you're dealing with.
-

Heller Mirages look like on Mirage. ;)
-
Every kit has its issues :-wise, but this is way too much :-dal
As per my join to this GB, count me in, but only somewhere towards the end 2012, when I clear all I have on the desk and in mind until then :-think
Also Japan GB will see my posts, yet again later, when I get time to lay my hands on Academy's A6M5c... this is one of plans.
-
I welcome your Japan project, Profa! I still have four projects to add to that build as well, so we'll keep it alive for a long time. Same with the '109--contribute when you're able.
Some small progress on my first rebuild. After I started examining the inside of the fuselage I discovered that this is an Airfix kit from the early seventies. Judging from my workmanship I would bet I built this around 1975 or so (though I don't remember the build of this one as I usually do). The red paint took more than oven cleaner to remove it. I used the acetone/alcohol mixture with sandpaper to loosen it up. A little touching up in the cockpit and back together with the principal parts, then a touch of filler. This model actually fits pretty nicely and has fairly decent detail for its age.
-
This is not small kit! ;)
You have made excellent progress. :-clap Go forward! :-tri
-
Thanks, Sall.
The G is in the "stripping pan" while I drink coffee and prepare to work on our car. I'm having a lot of trouble with markings right now--I've changed my mind three times on how to paint the F and four on the G. Too many neat schemes to choose from!!!!!
-
Yes, you are right... many patterns. Have you check out topic on Art section?
-
Yes, and I'd thought about possibly one of the Finnish machines but I have some other decals here. Lots of time, Lots of models, Lots of markings......LLL!
-
No time for the '109s this morning--auto maintenance instead. The ignition switch in our 300,000 mile-old '98 Jetta was acting up and I dreaded doing this. It turned out to be a much easier job than I had feared and I actually had time to strip the paint from the Gustav when I was finished!
-
Jeta from '98? It last long mate :)
-
That's our "new car" too! :-wise The '91 GTI has just over 270,000. We've spent very, very little on repairs to either VW, or any of the others we've owned over the years. In fact, I miss my old air-cooled VWs and someday I'm going to have a split-window Kafer in the garage. :-love
The Otaki G received the disassemble/strip/clean/reassemble treatment in my "spare time". Both the F and G are almost ready for primer.
-
Some of interesting subjects for work. First image is E model but with unfinished cartoon on fuselage. Second image- long time ago I have Hasegawa 1/72 kit with this insignia used, today I know it have grey colors on it, not green. Emblem is interesting. Third image show how the strip painted bottom started on G-6 model, Fw190D are much better known later by this feature. Galland F model with interesting fuselage features... and last image in row is JG26 machine with interesting camouflage and markings.
-
My friend had Jetta until soon, but he sell her. :( It was nice machine. ;) :-flo
Nice photos Srecko! :-flo You are always on the right place on the right time. ;)
-
No.1,
Do you possibly know when the photo with the unfinished Adamson was taken? Very interesting series of pictures!
The fairings for the larger guns in Galland's airplane are mentioned in the JG-26 book I have. He was very proud of the unit mechanics and armorers for their excellent work in fitting the guns Everyone who had been involved in this F modification was quite appalled at the huge fairings (buelen) the factory later designed on the G.
-
I should look at data but I think it is made in Germany. No data on image. Here you are my next image of my build and must say that show time continue with this kit as well it have no counterweights!!! I can not believe that company with that reputation could deliver product like this one... I have some in spare box but no way I will use it. Just to see it finished and blow it away from my desk and take something normal to work.
-
Everything is for people! :-razz :)) Joke! :-joke
-
Power to the people :))
-
While I had the primer out I sprayed these two reconstructions to find the remaining flaws. I've finally picked out the paint schemes for both of these. I also bought another Otaki/Arii G for an IAR-built Romanian machine I've wanted to do for some time.
-
Did anybody know about Tamya Bf109 kits in 1/72, price, availability... ?
-
I think they only do a Bf109E, it's about £12.

Are you doing the Bf109Ga-6 with the extended upper cowling bulges? I bought the resin conversion kit for it, which comes with 3 decal options. All post-war, but they were used against the Axis from 1944 onwards. The Airfix 109F is a very good model, I wish I still had mine, although I do have the new ICM one, which has a full engine. It's a nice model, worth buying. Good progress on your kits :)
-
I masked cockpit and maybe I will paint it today.
-
Is this the Airfix kit?
-
Yes, new Airfix...
-
Are you doing the Bf109Ga-6 with the extended upper cowling bulges?
No, I'm doing an earlier Ga-4 (the third IAR ship) with the standard bulges. I have the decals here and found another unbuilt Otaki kit on the web so I can do a better job than I did on the one I'm restoring.
-
Seems to be going well so far, so keep going!
-
Now that I have the Otaki kit on my bench I have five different manufacturers '109 kits in front of me. The Otaki G is really a pretty product, with some of the most delicate scribing I've seen. Here are three photos of some of the moldmaker's art that went into this kit:'
Bear in mind that I've just taped the fuselage together to fit-check it. Also, the gun bulges on this are optional and you can see where I've used a tiny bit of filler to eliminate the gentle locating marks on the skin. The fit of the kit is very nice and requires almost no filler. There isn't a lot of detail in the cockpit, but for less than $10.00 I can fix that little issue.
-
Will see later some image of the type and to make some extract, maybe could be of help
-
Painted all blue and later will add grey patches. Nice invention on kit- flat top fuselage just behind the cockpit :-smey :-smey :-crazy
-
@Scott
Just go ahead. I have no doubt that you will make magnificent job! ;)
@Srecko
Which markings you will use? This one of Finland AF on the box? :-think
-
Italian...
-
From box or something from stash?
-
Absolute from box with all of its shortcomings :))
-
:)) :-ok
-
Camouflaged and I am really wait for moment to torn it away from my work bench and take something to relax me...
-
Fabulous work, no matter whether you don't like the kit, you're making a wonderful job of it :-ok
I'm online if you're not too busy!
-
Not bad for what you started with!
A question--would it be of interest if I did a comparison of some of the various parts of my five different kits? Since they're from five different manufacturers and a 35 year time span it might be fun, it also might be a waste of bandwidth.
-
Thank you for comments ;) Comparison is always interesting so go ahead :))
-
Excellent job. Not see with what you start!! ;)
I like your camoulage. :-clap
-
Nice!!!
-
My comparison idea isn't going to work too well. Two of the models are already built and partially painted so it wouldn't be an honest "contest". Here are the props and gear parts that I tested my idea on:
The cockpit for the Romanian G and the long-unfinished Eduard Fw-190D got painted this morning also:

After your post I start to like Otaki kit. By the way- do you have technical drawings?
-
I'll see if I have a Hasegawa G-6 (1:48) for you, Srecko. Let me know if you want one.
-

Will talk in private mate ;)
-
Cool, email me :)
-
After your post I start to like Otaki kit. By the way- do you have technical drawings?
I've always liked the Otaki kits. They have drawbacks, such as fairly basic cockpits and the landing gear parts on some of them are not very detailed, but the fit of every one I've put together has been very nice. Now that I'm restoring the old builds I find them even nicer than I had remembered. The exterior detail is usually very delicate yet crisp.
I don't really have any of the super-serious technical drawings on the 109, just some references and the internet. It's amazing how heavily researched this particular airplane has been over the years and how much has been written about it from a technical viewpoint.
Oh, I also forgot to mention earlier that the Otaki kit has the umbrella holder fairings molded in for the Tropical variant. They had to come off for the example I'm building.
-
My kit is coming to the closing, this is finishing work.
:-flo
-
On top side of wings those squares painted in light gray... It is not real square. Some paint escaped, or it should be like that? :-think
-
Yes, paint escaped, I did not care at all. As well it is painted over I have make later some brush paint over and add some reality on kit and correct problems. Is it square I have no idea, I did not try to search images at all...
-
Ready for flat varnish and yes- I did not fix the gap on fuselage half's :-tri :-razz And no plans for that...
-
Good work! 109's have a visible seam on the rear fuselage anyway :)
-
This is somehow completed...
-
For all the inherent faults, the model still looks good, and you never gave up on it :) I particularly like the faded finish. Well done!
-
I agree with David. ;) Nice job! :-clap
-
I like it!!!
-
All right, thank you :)
-
Very nice finish and I really enjoy the Italian flavor. When we get back from holiday I hope to continue on a couple of my projects.
-
I hope I eill also continue ;) Thank you for kind words :))
-
A tiny update of my Otaki Gustav. No.1 sent me some good information that helped me to open the radiator outlets on this one. On later builds I may get around to dropping the flaps also, but not on this kit. I also inserted the cockpit and joined the fuselage halves as you can see. I don't know how much time I can devote to this thread for the rest of the week, but I'll try.
-
Nice update mate :-ok Please note that I received some German insignia decals so if you miss anything just let me know (and good chance to make build a bit official)
-
:-ok
-
:-ok
-
i will participate... my one ill be a hasegawa 109f on 1/48, the kit are on the primer aplication, coming soon i post the pics of the progress
cheers
-
Aha! Yet another manufacturer's edition! Great to hear you're jumping in.
-
This kit from Heller in 1/72 is my next :)) It is K but as well it need to be engraved, from engraving will depend if it will be completed as K or G-10
-
Great! :-jump One more fresh build in this topic. :-jump
-
I consider this subject to build. Interesting detail is yellow propeller blade tips, not usual for German machines. Also I look for one funny build- post war use of the German 300 liter fuel tank as boat, seen somewhere in Netherlands :-clap
-
No.1, I think that airplane has a Hamilton Standard propeller on it. Notice the shape of the blades--they look very much like the paddle blades used on later B-17s and B-24s. Do you suppose they hung one on there as a test of some sort? That would also explain the yellow tips. The VDM design was licensed to Hamilton Standard and I seem to recall that they used the same shaft spline count and diameter but I'm not positive of that.
-
There was enough of spares in that time so no need for replacement I guess. Also this look like typical European landscape and buildings but will take more search about this.
-
If you look close at the prop, it's bent backwards from impact as it was still turning. 109's were notorious for landing gear failures, as has happened here :)
-
And the yellow tips may just be bare metal, worn away by contact. What does everyone else think? It is a VDM prop.
-
And the yellow tips may just be bare metal, worn away by contact. What does everyone else think? It is a VDM prop.
I'm sure you're right on this. I did more thinking after I posted my idea and it doesn't really make much sense for anyone to have adapted a U.S. prop. Nice markings on that one, though.
-
In this way this will be only case that propeller blades remained intact after impact to soil. I get this info from Jicehen about this machine:
This plane was WNr 151536, a Bf 109 G-10 from Erla-Leipzig and belonged to II./JG 52 and was "schwarze 22". Red color was forbidden on the eastern front since novemeber 1944. The airfield could have been Neubiberg but I wonder...
If this is Erla-Leipzig built machine, I have some images of this manufacturer and I will see for details. And maybe to choose some other sample.
-
I present my "Box-O-Messerschmitts"! :-roll Next step will be to start the painting process.
The cockpit of the Otaki G whilst fitting the windscreen for the first time. I must say that the one-piece canopy of this model was a bit frustrating. I usually have fair success in using a razor saw to cut canopy parts, but this was so thin that I cracked the center portion during the sawing. No problem to make a new one, though.
-
Ha ha ha- look like Augsburg production line in their best days :))
And you are all right about the tips on image I send some before:
That are not yellow propeller tips on this Bf 109 G-10 but by landing on one leg the tips of the propeller touched the ground and paint was removed from the surface of the metal as by sanding down.
So if I work on this machine it will have standard blades color ;) Thank you for attention ;)
-
I'll come up here with two Heller (B/C and K-4) models, but somewhere in the indefinite future...
-
Actually I have three of them but can not find can with time or day extender...
-
I ended up scratchbuilding the camera installation metalwork on the bottom of the F. All three are ready for some painting of theatre bands, etc.--now to find the time!
-
Wait a moment... I have high resolution image, there is additional access panel ;)
-
Okay, I would like the info. I had very little to go on with this other than some line drawings.
-
Here you are three images, two are pointed on general notes on G-5/6 models (most of you do) and one is related to recce version.
-
Thank you for those photos, No.1. There is much to learn about every airplane, but I don't know of a machine that has been studied and documented as thoroughly as the '109.
I managed to spray the theatre bands and wingtips this evening and got the rudder done on the Ga-4 also.
Also I managed to pour some new resin wheels for the Ga-4 and to replace a missing one on one of the old builds. The Romanian example I'm modeling has the wing bulges for the later style wheels but the spoked style wheels were fitted.
-
I like your "chain", Scott ;)
-
I like your "chain", Scott ;)
Haha.. Me too. :))
-
Tonight I had just enough time to spray the lower surfaces with RLM 76 on all three of these.
-
Like in the real workshop mate ;)
-
:-clap
-
Like in the real workshop mate ;)
The real workshop didn't have to push heaps of tools and other junk out of the way, though! I am one of the world's worst at keeping the top of my desk clean and orderly. Even if I do a "clean/straighten" it always ends up looking like a salvage yard in a few minutes.
-
:-ok
-
In the meantime I think I have find sample I will work on it... just to confirm all data ;)
-
Grey 75 is applied. Once this is completely dry it will be time for the 74. Kinda boring right now, but all three are a little different. All will be clearer at the end....
-
Nice! :-ok
-
Once again, good progression...
-
I sprayed the 75 and then did the mottling on the sides tonight, mostly in shade 74. Once this cures it'll be on to clearcoating, decals, and final flat overspray.
-
How great look with three different camouflage pattern :-ok
-
I particularily like the camo of the second aircraft!!!
-
I particularily like the camo of the second aircraft!!!
Me too! :))
Great job Scott! :-clap
-
I've had my eye on the "sawtooth" wing scheme for a long time. From what I gather that was pioneered by reconnaissance units and was later used on some "normal" Bf-109s. There are a few photos of the airplane I'm replicating but only the right wing pattern is shown. The left wing is probably not accurate but more of a representation.
-
Wow the middle one is looking awsome.I love it.
-
Decals going on and preparing for weathering/final assembly.
-
:-ok
Nice, Scott!
-
Hehe.. :)) I like it very much! :-clap :-clap
-
Photos in 20 hours or so........
-
Okay, I finally put the final touches on the Romanian example, so here are a few photos of all three. First is the Bf-109G-6 of the 6th Fighter Regiment of the Bulgarian Air Force in April of 1944, stationed at Vrasdebna:

Next, the F-4/R3 from 1.(F)/122 that was stationed on Sicily during the summer of 1942:

Finally, the Romanian Bf-109Ga-4. This was the third license-built machine to be constructed at the IAR factory in Brasov. The airplane was stationed at Pipera-Bucharest Airfield with Grupul 7 Vanatoare in the spring of '44 and was damaged in a ground accident in June of that year.

Finally, a couple of shots of all three lined up for a mission.....

Nice work, Scott :) Like the Ga-4, nice decals! All three are lovely kits, great restoration job.
-
Nice work, Scott :) Like the Ga-4, nice decals! All three are lovely kits, great restoration job.
Thank you, David. The Romanian decals came from the IAR-80/81 that I built for LLL Magazine 06.
I must warn you, also, that the Aeromaster decals I sent you don't really respond well at all to Microscale setting solutions. When I started to apply the Bulgarian national insignia I dabbed on some MicroSol and it curled the decal up a bit. I was lucky and saved it with some patient massaging. They go on alright without any solution as it turns out.
-
Thanks for the advice, I'll just use water and 'Future' with them. Your IAR-80 was really nice, a clean build and a smart colour scheme :) What's next?
-
For the '109 thread I've got the two Es to start. First I need to finish that Cr.42 and F-84! :-roll
-
Go for it!
-
Oh, so beautiful birds you made Scott. Excellent job! :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Great trio mate :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Great work Scott!!!
-
Thanks, everyone!
Here is a "before and after" of the two restorations for no particular reason...

-
My friend, you did great rebirth work :)
-
Esthetical surgery... ;)
-
Nice comparation,and great job! :-clap
-
Some technical extracts, including rare Erla built G-10 version!!!
-
That's really handy, I was looking for these drawings. :)
Do you know any details regarding the Me209H/V1? I bought the Planet Models 1:72 resin kit at the show today, but it has the wrong wing in it :( I've emailed them in the hope that they will send a replacement.
-
H? Will see, not sure :(
-
Good news re :1:72 Me209H/V1 :-tri After I emailed Planet Models/CMK, they are going to send me a replacement wing free of charge. I can use the wing I have to build an Me109TL!
How about that? :-ok
-
:-ok :-ok :-ok
-
That really is great customer service, isn't it? I have the Jumo 004 engines and undercarriage from the MPM Me262 high-speed version, and a spare Bf109G fuselage as well :)
-
Sound good :)
-
Yea,good news! ;)
-
Next to go from my side ;)
-
Great! :-tri
-
Interesting! The Me-109T was the navalised version of the Me-109 with arrester hook and foldable wings for use on the aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin. The carrier never was operational, but the M-109T's were operationally used minus carrier equipment on one of the islands near the northern coast of Germany. Main advantage was that it had a larger wingspan than standard Me-109 and, consequently, could operate from shorter strips!
-
Very nice info Nico! :-flo
-
Most interesting is that this is in general E model and it is used until 1944 in operational service!!!
-
Nice subject as the T doesn't get enough attention, I think.
A question: Has anyone examined or built a Zvezda 1/48 Bf-109F? I have a chance to buy this at a discount and wonder if it's as nice as it seems to be. Thanks in advance!
-
Buy it, it's superb. Don't hesitate. Decals are dreadful though :) Get 2! Full engine and lots of weapon options :) :)
-
There was one of the MPM Bf109T's on sale at the show for £7. It has brass-etch and some resin, looks a build for the experienced, but lovely model. Academy do one as well in 1:48. Good purchase :)
-
Scott, if you buy 2 you can make an F-4 by adding two thin reinforcing strips at the tail join! It rewards the patient builder, but it's the best out there, and it has the correct smooth upperwing panels.
You could do a Hungarian one :)
-
Ahhh......so many plans going forward! :-eek :-help Thanks for the review of the F2. I thought it must be pretty nice from the photos I'd seen and I just may take your advice and get two. :-ok And thanks for the warning on the decals provided.
-
I'm sure decals won't be a problem. I have the ICM F-4, and it's great, but the Zvezda one is better. I'm not sure if the cowling panels are a great fit with the engine installed, but the engine is nice in it's own right. Of course, you could buy 3 and make a Bf109G-0 :)
-
Here is my progress on cockpit interior. A lot of sand work to remove base from some parts, fuselage sides are hardest in this way.
-
I love busy cockpits. This one will be great. :-ok
-
Painted in this moment, will take image in the morning
-
Believe me, hardly wait. ;)
-
Me too, too much unbuild kits in my home. Toooooooo much!!!!!
-
During the work I need to put battery on charger so we miss here few steps and images of interior before fuselage merge. Simply I was not ready to wait few hours for camera so I continue work. Hope you don't mind.
:-salut
-
:-ok
-
Comes nicely...
-
There is no kit which can not be made by use of brutal force and some filler :-razz
-
:)) :)) :)) :-ok
-
:)) :)) :)) :-ok
I agree. :))
-
Interior very dark grey is painted and vacu cockpit is placed. Problem again with light as well in the moment I work on kit my reflector bulb die. So I miss many optional images to make last night. Last image is my own choice for RLM66
-
Go ahead! ;)
-
Panzer Grey and RLM 66 are very close in tone, and, bearing in mind the propensity of the fading process, either colour is applicable. In some ways, the colour you use is probably better, as neat RLM 66 on a 1:48 kit is probably a bit dark. With Panzer Grey you've already lightened the interior by 10-20%. Great initiative, Srecko :)
-
Seems that this little kit ask for tons of works...
But excellent work anyway, mate!
-
Thank you friends for kind comments :))
-
Well-deserved, your builds are inspirational.
-
Thank you :) Slow preparation for primer and check out
-
:-ok
-
Good progress!
-
All camouflage colors painted :))
-
I like the 'distressed' effect of the upper camouflage, nice blending. What wash will you give the panel lines? I like the idea of using dark brown preshading for underneath and a darker grey or black on top. I saw this technique on a large scale model and wondered what the forum thinks? Has anyone tried it?
-
Good camouflage Srecko! :-clap :-clap
-
I use no wash but several coats of over diluted paint. Best basic effect for later dirt effects.
Thank you :))
-
Nice!!!
-
Gentlemen, your builds in this thread are simply great and it's a pleasure to congratulate you for them. No matter how good or bad the kit is, you manage to finish it.
It's been over 15 years since I last built a 109, but with this group build I think I might recover one of those old kits and re-finish them as Scott did.
Food for thought!
Have a nice weekend, guys.
-
It's been over 15 years since I last built a 109, but with this group build I think I might recover one of those old kits and re-finish them as Scott did.
YES!!!! :-clapPlease do a restoration project--I've found them to be almost more fun that buiding from a new kit and I think you'll find it just as enjoyable.
Your new ship is looking great, No.1. :-flo I may start on an E this weekend if time permits.
-
We wait you ;)
-
Ready for decals ;)
-
MPM decals are worlds leader in cracking :-evil
-
Ohoooo.. I like "flame" on nose... Looks excellent! :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you :)
-
MPM decals are worlds leader in cracking :-evil
I had the same experience with the decals in my CW-21, but I thought it was because they were so old. Good to know this problem for later MPM builds.
It's going to be a neat addition to the collection!
-
Or to use aftermarket products...
-
Now that the topic came up, I used some decals from an MPM P-63 kit on the Soviet P-39 earlier this year and they were very brittle also. They were salvaged with the clear coating, but didn't really snuggle down too well.
-
Surface have to be absolute gloss and decals to be as much as possible in water and then if possible to slide them directly on place and with not much movement
-
Exactly correct.
-
Nice deco...
-
:))
-
I got a start on the Airfix 1/48 E tonight. So far, the fit is quite nice and the engineering is pretty good. The locating pins are very large (reminds me of kits of the "old days" and there are a couple of ejection pin marks on the cockpit sidewalls. The fuselage almost snaps together. So far, so good, quite unlike the 1/72 beast that No.1 built earlier in this GB.
-
This look so advanced, new tool?
-
Yes, it was introduced this spring I think.
I worked on it a bit more tonight and not much filler is required so far. It isn't quite as advanced as Tamiya but it is fun to build up to this point. I'm building this one straight from the box.
-
Looks nice indeed!
-
:-ok
-
A few more photos of the Airfix E. First two are the cockpit and a view of the rather thickly molded parts and large locating pins. These look a bit "old-fashioned" at first glance but the fit is quite nice.
The next two show the filler that was required. Really not much other than to correct a little fit issue in each leading edge where Airfix gives two options for guns. They give two leading edge sections for the early and late armament. Another place that takes a bit of filler is the aft wing-to-fuselage joint, but nothing that we all haven't experienced before.
Finally ready for primer and then paint. It's nice to build a kit with separate flight controls and flaps, especially when the parts fit as nicely as these do.
-
Great! Bravo! :-clap :-clap I like it! ;)
-
Nice progress...
-
I have learned another lesson about studying references closely! :-red :-red I had settled on a paint scheme for this Emil during the weekend and was preparing to lay out the masking this morning. I decided to examine my photo one more time. How I missed this HUGE detail I don't know, but the machine I was intending to model was a very early Bf109E-0 and the intake duct and exhausts are entirely different than my model. :-wall It is possible to modify the kit to match the early standard but I will pick another scheme instead. I don't feel like tearing this apart now and intended to build it out-of-box anyway.
It isn't like there are no cool paint schemes for the '109! :-ok
-
E-0 has some variations in this intake as well I know they are changed.
-
Yes and the embarrassing part of this is that I not only knew that the intake was different, the photo I was using clearly shows the long duct fairing! How blind could I be!!!! :-roll I think I just programmed my mind into thinking the airplane was a little later version rather than fully studying what I was looking at. No problem since I caught my mistake, though. This will give me a chance to build another '109. :-tri
-
I see no problem, this longer intake is easy to made
-
Further along with this one. Primered and small flaws corrected, and then a bit of RLM 02 on the leading edges under the slats.
-
What will be final version?
-
Well, that is still undecided. I think it will be the just-before-the-war 70/71/65 scheme but a couple of others are still itching at me.
Also, the 02 under the slats is bothering me somewhat. Just like Draken's Hellcat gun bay color, there are different options on the leading edge color that I need to decide on.
-
RLM 02 mate, this is basic protection color. Note only that interior of cockpit was not always in RLM 02, it was in first time on E models, later was changed into RLM 66. I have interview long time ago a pilot who flew Bf109E in Yugoslavia and he state that inside cockpit was very dark color.
-
Yes, I have been told the late E had 66 in the cockpit also.
On the leading edge color, I've seen photos that show both the 02 and the normal camouflage colors. I suspect the ones painted with camouflage color may have been done in the field with the slats deployed or at depot rebuilds. It is just another fascinating variation of details that the '109 is so famous for!
P.S.
I'm still debating the paint scheme. I have a couple that I'm going back-and-forth on. :-think Maybe over morning coffee I'll finally arrive at a decision! :-paper
-
After Coffee solutions sound to be best :))
-
Little remain to be done here
-
Looking good guys. ;)
-
Looks great, No.1! The T has almost a sailplane appearance with those extended wings.

:-ok

Nice progress! :-ok

An update and a question. First, I found this decal sheet today in my local shop. It's an old sheet but will help me with my paint scheme decision-making process.
The question: How much should I pay for a 1/48 MPM Bf-109T? I found one for U.S. $20.00 but don't know if I should buy it or not...... Does this price seem fair, No.1?
Thanks in advance.
Scott
-
Price sounds correct for 1/48th scale. That makes less than 15 euros...
-
Thanks for the advice, Draken. I'm going to put that kit on my "wish list".
Now that I've finally decided on the camouflage scheme I shot the undersides tonight.
Topsides tomorrow!

Very nice result, No.1. I've been looking at other possible markings schemes for this variant and I just may purchase the one I found locally.
-
Excellent job mate! :-clap :-clap :-clap I like it a looot! :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you :)
-
First top color laid on, fresh from the paint "booth" and drying. It's rather humid here today so I doubt this will cure fast enough to spray on the next shade.
I should mention something about the canopy parts while it is in my mind. Airfix does a great job of including different windscreen and canopy options in this kit. There are four windscreens, two hinged sections, and two aft fixed segments. For my model I'm using the early design with the rounded top corners. The framing is molded a little "soft" in some areas but can still be masked fairly easily, and the transparencies are very clear. You'll have to be quite careful when removing the canopy parts (especially the hinged portion) from the sprue tree, though--the clear plastic is brittle as it is in most model kits. I planned ahead on this part and carefully cut off a bit of sprue with the part, then used my Dremel tool to slowly remove the excess plastic. Then a few passes with a sanding stick and everything turned out just fine. The clear parts fit nicely, and Airfix saw fit to mold on two tabs for the center section that fit into slots on the right fuselage rail. I'll leave it up to the individual modeler to decide if they like this feature or not, but it does make attaching the canopy easier.
-
I have top impressions about this kit and your work on the same is great!
-
Yes, top paint look great. Can't wait to see it finished. ;)
-
It'll be a while--I'm working on our refrigerator right now........ :-wall :-think :-wall :-kr :-wall
-
I gave up on the refrigerator repairs (it still works) and went back to painting the '109.
-
Good, now you can have cold beer after model work :-ok
-
Yes! Actually the problem is with the ice-making attachment so the beer is still cold. :-ok
-
:))
-
Nice job mate, and nice news about beer. :-ok :))
-
Thanks for the tip, for canopies!
-
I have more to add about the canopies in this kit. The after section fits beautifully to the fuselage. The front windscreen section seems just a little narrower along the bottom edge than the cutout in the fuselage. I didn't really notice this until after I'd applied the first coat of paint. It isn't a huge problem and a little filler will fix it, but be aware of this if you build this kit.
Clear gloss is on, decals tomorrow if time allows. :-ok
-
Yesterday I received the Bf-109F2 kit made by Zvezda. This has been on my "must have" list since I first heard of it and it is beautiful. Here are a few photos of some of the detail. Notice that there are four windscreens and the early and late configuration. The rest speaks for itself!

I will probably save this for a later build as I'd like to do a "contest-worthy" construction on it.
-
Open engine?
-
:-tri
Great builds in this thread. The Zevzda kit looks simply awesome :-love
-
Yes, it looks great to me also. It may be a time before I tackle this one as I have plans for it.
No.1, I'm thinking about either all cowlings open or an engine change in progress. Not sure yet, but the kit demands more than being all cowled up.
-
Zvezda can make excellent kit when they want, like MiG-21, which i build. But they know to shit up things sometimes...
Zvezda MiG-21Bis/PFM 1/72 is definitely the best MiG-21Bis/PFM kit in 1/72 on market. DEFINITELY!!
This kit is also very nice. ;)
-
The ICM one is great, but this is much better. I hope you really enjoy it. Hungarian version in experimental camouflage? The Airfix 1:48 kit was also very good, apart from the raised lines. I've seen it turned into a lovely model.
Nice choice, Scott :)
-
The 1/48th Airfix Emil is now finished. More photos when time permits.
This is a really, really fun kit to put together. :-love

This image is look great! All right, when you have time I guess more will to follow... ;)
-
This pic is beautiful Scott! :-clap Also, we wait for more. ;)

Here are a few more photos of the E-1. The markings are those of then-Oberleutnant Joseph Priller at the time of the Polish invasion. He was then Gruppen Adjutant of I/JG51. The lower wing markings are the oversized version that were painted on after friendly-fire incidents during the conflict.

And a photo of the two principal fighter adversaries in early September of 1939.
I've mentioned it several times during this build--I highly recommend this offering from Airfix if you wish to build a 1/48 Bf 109E. It's fun to construct and the fit is really excellent.
-
Excellent job Scott!! Plane is wonderful!! :-clap :-clap
-
Wonderful work mate and nice combo with 'Jedenastka' :-ok
-
Congratulations, Scott!!!
-
I found another of the little Airfix Emils on sale so I'll be doing another E-1 here. The cockpit is finished and the fuselage joined with the wing, all in the space of an hour or so. This is an out-of-box build with just some seatbelts added.
-
Good one mate :)) Did Airfix have different wing bottom as well E-1 have machine guns in wings?
-
Great, great work mate! I like it! :-clap :-clap
Go ahead with new kit! :-ok
-
Good one mate :)) Did Airfix have different wing bottom as well E-1 have machine guns in wings?
Yes, No.1 there are optional parts. The leading edge is cut out so you can add the part for either the MG 17 or MG FF cannon. Then you must open a locating hole in the lower wing panel for the breech fairing for the cannon. In fact, I'm building this airplane with the MG FFs. In my photo you can see the red filler where the optional leading edge parts are installed. These two parts have a bit of a fit problem but this is easily fixed with some putty. They are also the only two real fit problems on the whole kit.
I mentioned the quality of this model when I built the Priller machine, but I'll restate it: This is a fantastically relaxing model to build. When you open the box and look at the sprues it seems almost toylike because the fuselage and wing walls are rather thick, but this is only an illusion. It's just a relaxing model to construct and looks the part of a Bf-109 when finished. They also seem to go on sale here in the States frequently--I paid less than $15.00 for this one.
-
This one is also nice for considering with bottom in RLM 65, top in Italian sand and spot in RLM 80 :-flo
-
I wonder what the unit number or marking was on that airplane? I've thought about doing an E-7 and that one was on my list. :-flo This kit includes all the parts to build a -7 Trop complete with bomb rack and bomb. Perhaps the next one I'll do in the Afrika scheme.
Now I'm casting about to fill the late-war gap in my -109 collection, the G-10/14 and K-4. I'm tempted to get one of the old Revell kits just to try it. I also want to build some Jumo powered early airplanes, but I can't ever catch a Classic Airframes kit that I can afford. I may have to break down and buy an Academy B or C for a Spanish Civil War machine.

JG 27

-
Yes, but I'd really like to see the ship number of that particular machine. More research! :-ok
-
Good one mate :)) Did Airfix have different wing bottom as well E-1 have machine guns in wings?
Here's a photo of the breech fairing on the underside of the Emil wing. To model the cannon-armed airplane you simply install the correct leading edge section, open the hole in the wing surface (I forgot to do this after gluing the wings together but the hole is easy to find) and glue on the fairing.
Also, with this kit, there are bombs and drop tanks as well as many canopy sections for the various options. My spares box runneth over!
-
I see now, look like fine solution ;)
-
RLM 75 applied and propeller painted:

After seen your build I think about to get one of this in some future ;)
-
Good progress mate. :-ok
-
After seen your build I think about to get one of this in some future ;)
I very much like this kit as stated earlier. It is really quite simple to build and I like how it looks when finished. One area of criticism I do have is that the sprue attachment points are sometimes quite thick and in hard-to-trim places. The wing slats are very hard to remove from the trees wiithout damaging them, for example. The canopy sections also suffer a little from this. These are minor problems, though, and the fit throughout is excellent. Glue isn't even needed on some parts!
-
RLM 74 sprayed on and curing. Will clear gloss ASAP and then decals.

Once again,good job! :-clap :-clap
Airbrush day on your side. :-flo :))

Here's the finished Airfix Emil. The 2./JG 26 markings came from a Superscale sheet and represent the machine of Oberleutnant Fritz Losigkeit approximately in March/April of 1940.

Thank you! :-flo
I am finding that I can't stop building Messerschmitts....... ;)here's the old Fujimi kit I just picked up for the decal sheet. I may as well put it together and add it to the fleet.

Good work, Second Air Force :-salut :-obey
-
At least it look easy to assembly ;)
-
:-ok
-
Thanks, y'all!
Yes, No.1, it is a very relaxing kit to put together and the parts fit very well, actually. I have it all assembled and primed now and part of the markings sprayed on as well.
-
RLM 76 is on, then the airbrush started acting odd. I've got to strip and clean it before continuing.

I do that with mine yesterday ;)

Here's the final update on my old Fujimi G-6 that I bought for the decal sheet.
First, I needed a green numeral 1 and none were available here. So, the old method of doubling up decals worked fine. The green decal sheet came from an old green heart decal and the white is plain decal sheet.
The finished model, done as the G-6 flown by Hermann Graf when he took over JG-50 to fine-tune attack methods against the four-engined bomber threat. I decided to model the airplane as it was when he first arrived without the red tulip nose markings.

It's hard to believe I have never built one of the Monogram/Revell Bf-109G-10 kits. I've seen these on the shelves for over thirty years and never given a thought to purchasing one. Now that I've learned much more of the technical side of the development of this fighter (thanks to Jicehem and his research in great part) I appreciate this kit. Here is the basic assembly of the parts before starting to paint. The cockpit isn't greatly detailed, typical of kits from the 1970s, but the overall fit is pretty nice. I'm going to enjoy building this.
-
This is excellent kit for me, I have just seen one long time ago but never get one
-
I like it a lot so far. The kit I'm building is a modern issue and there is a little flash on some of the parts, not surprising since the mold has been in use for so long. The inside of the wing (and bottom of the left elevator) has the manufacturer and date printed-1979-but the parts are now molded in China. The detail overall is very nice and will look pretty good when finished. By the way, I'm using one of your profiles for my paint scheme, No.1. It'll be G-10 "Weiss 5" when finished.
The cowlings and fuselage fairings are quite neat. It's amazing how much wider the cowl is with the larger supercharger used on these late machines.
-
Do you have image of this 'Weiss 5' you are plan to build? Interesting info that molds are done in China
-
:-ok
-
I join again with Revell kit in 1/72
-
Revell is nice little kit...

-
Do you have image of this 'Weiss 5' you are plan to build? Interesting info that molds are done in China
Yes, I found one here: http://www.letletlet-warplanes.com/forum/vazduhoplovna-umetnost-warplane-art/bf109g/135/
I think Revell shipped at least some, if not all, of their manufacturing process to China years ago to cut down costs. I believe this happened not too long after Monogram was absorbed completely into the Revell organization. I seem to recall reading that the Monogram molding equipment here in the U.S. had been sold. I was a little surprised that the mold was modified to reflect this. You can see where "Monogram" was removed and "Revell" inserted in its place, then "China" was added below this script.
Good to have you also rejoin this build, No.1!
I must make an editorial comment about the Bf-109. THERE ARE TOO MANY OF THESE TO BUILD! :-wall :-eek :-help :-jump :-love I scrupulously built only two Messerschmitts and two Spitfires in forty years because I knew it would become addictive to do more. Well, because of you people on LLL, I can now say I have the affliction. :-tri :-flo I may have to set up a donation jar in order to fund this addiction....... :))
-
All right, I know themachien so I will provide all available info about :))
-
I did some scratchbuilding in the cockpit to add some detail. Also I opened the holes in the strut wells for the main landing gear before closing up the wings, then sprayed the interior colors. Next will be joining the fuselage halves.

The G-10 is ready for paint. I've got to take a few days off from the model desk, however, so no progress for a while.

Some archive assistance :)) Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-10, WNr 61xxxx, number 5, II./ JG 52, Neubiberg, 1945.05.12 for Second Air Force, cowling details and two options for me.

Thanks for those images, No.1! That is definitely the machine I'm planning. :-ok In fact, I had just enough time to spray the first color before we leave the house.

I must boast a tiny bit--I've finally purchased (it cost me too much, but that is beside the point now.... :-kr) a Classic Airframes Bf-109C kit. I had begun to think this would never happen. So I now have the potential of some Jumo powered early machines on the horizon. :-tri
-
Here is a quick-review of the UM G-6 for those who might be thinking about purchasing one. There are VERY many spare parts that come with this including bomb racks, drop tanks, a full DB 605, Trop air filter, two vertical tails, two types of horizontal stabilizers, etc. I haven't gotten the drawings out but the model seems quite nice at first glance.

Now that we're back from out of town I've spent a bit of time on these modeling projects. The lower color is on Weiss 5--now the fun begins, the variously sprayed upper camouflage.

Little progress on the Revell G-10, thanks to No.1's profile and photos he sent me.

Thank you! I need to correct a couple of small areas where the different colors were overlaid before clear and markings.

I like it too! Beautiful camouflage. :-clap :-clap

The camouflage errors I made are corrected and the clear gloss applied. Hopefully decals go on this weekend.

A quick view of the two early kits I've finally acquired, the Academy and Classic Airframes Jumo-powered versions:

I'm weighing the various options on what to do with these two kits. The Academy/Hobbycraft model has numerous small inaccuracies, especially in the cowling area, but it's inexpensive and plentiful. The Classic Airframes nose is quite nice (as is the rest of the kit) but it's nearly impossible to obtain a kit without spending a small fortune. At this point the CA is being used along with No.1's excellent three-view print as a pattern for updating the Academy parts. Other kitbashing ideas are also floating around in my head :-blah :-dal :-jump......stay tuned for later updates on this, probably on a separate thread.
-
From beginning the two early Jumo versions I've gone back and finished one of the last versions. Here's the Monogram/Revell Bf-109G-10. The paint scheme is courtesy of our own No.1, coming from one of his excellent profiles in this thread:http://www.letletlet-warplanes.com/forum/vazduhoplovna-umetnost-warplane-art/bf109g/ Also I thank him for sending me enhanced photos of the real airplane.

The kit was a very relaxing build, nearly box-stock with just a few enhancements in the cockpit and upgraded antennae. The decals mostly came from the kit with the numeral from an old decal sheet.

Great job mate!!! :-clap :-clap :-clap

Great job mate :-ok

Here's the Otaki G-6, converted to a G-2 by removing the wheel bulges on the wings. A nice fitting kit, the filler you see here is all that's needed.

For the nationality: Finnish, post-war...
-
It's MT-213 and I'm using an old AviationUSK decal sheet that I found. I thought about doing it in the "as delivered" paint scheme but I've got enough grey '109s for now.
-
Here's the Otaki/Arii Finnish G-2.

I'm going to throttle back on the 109 builds now so I can concentrate on a couple of other projects that are sitting idle in my pile........ ;)
-
I like this one mate :-ok :-clap
-
Great,great job! :-clap :-clap
-
The Finns came up with a very pretty camouflage scheme on this, I think. It's always been something I've wanted to do.
The AviationUSK decals are easy to work with but I wish I had used some white decal film under the lower wing roundels as the yellow bleeds through somewhat. I didn't put enough effort into this project, I reckon, but it does fill another of the missing nationalities in my Messerschmitt collection. I just rearranged my display area and ended up with an entire shelf of '109s. :-eek (And two more that didn't fit....)
-
Splendid, mate!
-
Thanks, y'all!
I was going to stop working on later 109s but the T was already started, so I reckon I'll finish it. First I had to install some wheelwells as the MPM kit comes without the outer portions. I have molded a set of wheelwells and so can easily make resin copies. These were trimmed to fit and installed before closing up the long wings.
MPM provides resin cockpit sidewalls but I decided to use the styrene ones from a Hobbycraft Bf-109C. These are incorrect for a Jumo powered airplane and are really E panels, pretty much what was needed for the T. The resin bits and cockpit floor are from the MPM T.

Good approach mate :-clap
-
Good work! ;)

RLM 02 in the wheelwells, 66 in the cockpit. The airplane being built here was serving in the 1943 timeframe so the darker cockpit color should be accurate. I must admit it might still have been 02 but......

There wasn't much spare time this weekend for model building, but I did manage to assemble the majority of the big parts. For a short-run kit MPM did a nice job on this, the fit is really not bad at all. :-ok
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/IMG_0137.jpg)
-
Good progress! :-clap
-
Primer and yellow fuselage band applied, canopy parts masked and installed. I decided to use some leftover Airfix Emil parts for the windscreen and rear transparency and the MPM supplied vacuform center section.
Also, the T has a somewhat larger intake than the standard E since it was equipped with a higher output DB 601. The kit part was close, but not quite what was needed. The spare Airfix Trop. intake from the spares bin was cut to the right length and the intake port fashioned from sprue.
-
:-clap :-ok
-
Nice. :-ok
-
Part of the uppersurface camouflage scheme is now applied. I'm trying something different with this one, painting the top colors first, then the RLM 76 underside and fuselage sides. I always paint bottom first, then top, but I think this may work better.
-
Will try this way also :)
-
I painted the lower and side RLM 76 last night and I really liked this method. I've never painted the underside last but it seems easier on these machines with the light color so far up the sides of the fuselage. Now for mottled side camouflage and then clearcoating.
-
I have finally gotten tired of digging in the spares box for tailwheel assemblies. :-wall :-wall :-wall An RTV mold is now in-hand to make them when needed...... :-tri

FINALLY this model is finished. Many problems with this build, none of them the fault of the MPM kit. I dropped this twice when painting it, both times knocking the horizontal stabilizers off. Fortunately, not much else was damaged during these "gravity checks".
Bf-109T-2, Schwarz 11, assigned to 11.JG11 at Lister, Norway in 1944. The numerals were cut from black decal sheet. I used a spare Airfix windscreen and rear transparency with the kit vacuformed hinged section. Also a Hobbycraft/Academy tailwheel, Airfix wing guns, and Airfix solid spinner.

Nice--I have some idea of your final scheme and it will be great!
You've drawn me into starting this one:

Just test fitting the parts so I set the two Academy kits together, first of the breed and last:

And I continue my sample ;)

Great! I was incorrect in my guess of your paint scheme.
A start on the small modification on the wheelwells of my K, adding the extra space for the wider tires.

-
Nice!
-
Nice work at all on your kit and no worry about my scheme- even I did not know until last moment what I will do. To regret lack of numbers have major influence what airplane I will make.
-
Isn't that always the case! I wish there were a decal sheet in each scale with nothing but numerals and another with letters.
-
This can plague many interesting builds :(
-
We've been too busy with other chores for me to spend much time on modeling, but a little did get done on the various '109s. The messy "assembly line" shows that housekeeping has suffered.......

Small progress here, both on the K and D.
-
For me this is great progress if we take attention how many builds you do right now :))
-
I should finish some others (Tiger I, TBD, Horten etc.) that I have started but the 109 lures me in! Sometimes I need to relax and the K is one of those "relaxation builds".
Incidentally, I have read many horror stories on the web about the Academy Bf-109K. Parts don't fit, inaccurate, etc. I have had no problem at all with the fit on this kit so far and only an average amount of filler is used. The details aren't perfect, but for a shelf model it's alright. It isn't a Hasegawa kit, but it is about 1/3 the cost. I actually bought this for the separate wing bulges anyway......and I've got resin copies on the wings of the kit now.
-
Under-surface paint applied to both the D and K. I decided to experiment with "countershading" on the K as a weathering method. I've usually applied washes after painting but this method does show promise.
-
This do look great mate, give life to kit :)
-
Thanks, mate. This is a "practice" kit only and other experiments will follow. :-danger :-wch

I apply spots as well light wood color on wing root sleeve ;) Rough work, must correct it later.
-
Little progress here, too. I forgot to paint the JG 27 Reichsverteidigung fuselage band before the lower surface paint. So.....I masked and sprayed it this morning. Now all the easy painting is done on this project and it's time to get down to the hard part.

Small update, I put decals :)

This is my aproach to the subject:
Hi Dimitris,
Nice subject indeed.
If you apply these markings to your plane, please pay attention to the "Heart" insigna. It's not red but black.

I appreciate this kit. Here is the basic assembly of the parts before starting to paint. The cockpit isn't greatly detailed, typical of kits from the 1970s, but the overall fit is pretty nice. I'm going to enjoy building this.
This kit is very old (issued in 1977 !) and although it has some shortcomings, it stays one of the better base for a G-10.

Some archive assistance :)) Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-10, WNr 61xxxx, number 5, II./ JG 52, Neubiberg, 1945.05.12 for Second Air Force, cowling details and two options for me.
Hi mate,
On the first photo, it's not a short radio mast but a propeller blade of the plane behind.

I just performed "surgery" on my model to rectify this! Thanks for that pointer, Jicehem.
-
Here's some painting progress from my side.
First of all, the fuselage Balkenkreuz on this particular airplane was "toned down". The black center cross was actually painted in one of the upper fuselage colors. I had no decals to match this, so a mask was made and they were sprayed on.
After clearing that hurdle the masking and painting went forward. This airplane is one of those with "modular" paint, where the subcontractors painted segments without regard for matching patterns or colors. The following colors of camouflage are all here in one place or another: RLM 76 (the greener shade, sometimes called 84), 75, 81, 82, and 83.

Two questions : can anyone give the proof that RLM 83 :
1) Was officially used on airplanes (Personnally, i'm searching for more than 20 years and found none...)

The RLM 83 (and 84, for that matter) query is really one of those questions that will probably go on forever, isn't it? Until I started to build here on LLL I never gave Luftwaffe camouflage a second thought, but now my mind is full of the research that y'all have done through the years. :-ok :-obey I've read the various articles and seen the "evidence", both pro and con, but I know I'm unqualified to answer the question.
This K that I'm finishing is a practice kit of sorts and the color choice adds variety to my collection. I have four different profile artworks from four different artists and they all differ from each other! I picked the profile of our Srecko as my primary guide for this. A relaxing project and good exercise in painting procedures, but my example is probably far from accurate.
No.1, your K has turned out great! A fine scheme for the "patchwork" fighter!

Not the first time that big manufacturer make mistake...
Yes, but it must be said that color photos of those planes, untill recently, were unknown and, it's a very good example that on black and white pictures it's very difficult to find the real colors... That let me think that it's the same than for camouflage colors. Many colors are only suppositions... Even by great reknown artits.

True but strange how could be miss old green colors camouflage with late grey colors camouflage (difference is obvious even on black and white images). Anyway I hope that our friend will note this point and make correct kit.

Decals are going on the K, with another Monogram G-10 at the starting blocks. I need to get one of these prepared for the release of the new book release by our Nico and Srecko!

Hi mates :-salut :-salut :-salut,
You'll understand immediately why different colors have same renderings on b/w prints. The graphs used are those of the color sensitivenesses of films used during the 1940-1950's years. German used almost only panchromatic films aprt from Agfa with their Isochrome (50 ASA or 18/10 DIN which was orthochromatic). Others used also panchro, orthochromatic, panchro-ortho, and panchro-red films (high sensitive at 160 ASA). Contrary to what is always said, ortho films were yellow sensitive but not to red and panchro-red rendered red as a light grey in place of medium grey for other panchro films. There were also ortho-panchro films which were very near the rendering of panchro films.
Personnally I ought to use ortho films several times to reproduce documents the backgrounds of which had yellowed and more with yellow lights. That let the background becoming white on the print.
Kodak had ortho Verichrome (50 ASA) and panchro Panatomic X (25 ASA), Plus X (50 ASA) and Super XX (80 ASA).
Gevaert had ortho Gevachrome (64 ASA), and panchro Gevapan 27 (32 ASA), Gevapan 30 (64 ASA) and Gevapan 33 (125 ASA).
llford had ortho Selochrome (64 ASA) and panchro Pan F (12 ASA), FP 3 (50 ASA) and HP 3 (100 ASA).
Perutz had only panchro films (used by the PK) : Perpantic (40 ASA), Peromnia (100 ASA) and Peromnia 23 (160 ASA)
Ferrania also had only panchro films : Super Panchro 28 (40 ASA) and Super Panchro 32 (100 ASA)
1) Graphs of sensitiviness (You must note that at the points where two or more graphs intercept the density of grey is the same on the print. Concerning a graph itself, the density is the same at every point where it intercepts the horizontal lines of sensitivity) :
2) Renderings on b/w prints (with different sorts of films and filters at the shooting) For gray paints these graphs are modulated by the prevailing color (green-grey, red-grey, blue-grey, violet grey, etc) i. e. a blue-grey will appear lighter then a green-grey and a reddish grey will be darker than the two others... It's the reason why it's impossible, under some lighting conditions and at 90%, to distinguish RLM 74 from RLM 82, even from RLM 81 and RLM 65 from RLM 76... and "83" from 75. It's to be noted that the rendering of the different greens employed as camouflage colors is almost the same independently of the sort of film used. It's the same for the contrast...

Hi mate,
You may use these charts if you want. French films are missing because French had something else to do during the war years and French photographs (Free French armies) were taken with British or American films. For the period 1939-1940, I may give you the different French films used.
Legends must be translated...

I have a headache now...... :-paper :) Honestly, thank you for steering the conversation to the interpretation of these old photos and filmstock. The more research the better, as far as I'm concerned.
This topic brings up something I've experienced. As most of you know I've done considerable work on airworthy WWII aircraft. Most of the owner/operators don't really have more than a passing thought as to accuracy of schemes and correct colors. Some I've been involved with even ignore or belittle the researchers and modelers who study these issues. I've been saddened by this attitude (not common to all warbird operators, mind you). My opinion is that we're all capturing, or trying to capture, a piece of history and to do so accurately should be a goal for all.
With that experience in mind, I again salute ALL of you who have spent years carefully and thoughtfully trying to put facts together in an effort to properly document our past. :-salut :-salut :-salut
Y'all are great and I'm humbled to be able to benefit from your hard work.

Your words are very nice. Thank you very much.
I've up-dated my post.

Sad start- I start this morning Hasegawa Bf 109G-6 and when I start fuselage assembly I realize that I don't have very important part, engine cover at top. So I paint this interior, put parts back in the box and return to shelf :( :-dal Maybe one day I will solve this...
I take parts for the instrument panel for Bf 109E in 1/4 scale and spray basic black coat.
-
If Hasegawa has same customer service as Revell it should be no problem to get missing part!
For Revell I have done this several times. They want to have exact number and description of missing part together with Bar-code of box. Got missing decal sheet for Do-217 within a few days!
-
All right, will do like that
-
Hope the kit is still current and that spare parts are still existing!
On the other hand it must not be very difficult to make engine cover from spare box but of course original part is the best!
-
Will also ask if anybody have this kit and to make copy of the part but first at all will look for replacement part.
-
Sorry about the missing cowling section, No.1. I don't have anything that will help you as all my parts are 1/48.
Here is the Academy Bf-109 K practice kit. It really isn't the worst model I've ever built but I'm sure there are numerous inaccuracies on it. Nevertheless I enjoyed putting it together and it looks alright in my display case. And, I learned about countershading before painting final colors and rather like the effect. I also pirated a few items for resin casting, especially the wing bulges. These will be very handy for other late G projects.

The markings are inspired by a profile in No.1's Bf-109 artwork thread and some postwar photos. These are a mix of Academy (upper and lower wings and tail), home-made numerals, and masked/sprayed fuselage Balkenkreuz. The main gear tires are from the Monogram G-10. I used the Academy tailwheel and strut but it really doesn't look quite right to me.
Now to clean up the desk and make some space. Things get out of control when more than one project is being built at the same time.....
-
Final look is really great and info you shared is valuable :)
-
Oh,this one is also greaaat!! :-clap :-clap :-clap :-clap Great job mate!! :-clap
-
Hi, :-salut :-salut :-salut
This K-4 looks very convincing. Bravo ! :-ok :-ok
Is it the one which was found at Prague-Kbelly ?
Cheers,
Jicehem :-wave :-wave :-wave
-
Yes, this one mate :) We did color profile for your book :))
-
Great! :-ok
-
It's been many, many years since I entered a model in any kind of show or contest. I've been collecting up the bits and parts for such a project and decided to start this evening.
This is the beginning of the first engine, a DB 601 from a Zvezda Bf-109F-2. As complete and wonderful as this kit is, they missed the injection pump and coolant tube. Quickboost provides a nice resin piece to rectify the missing components.

There are two Zvezda kits on my "to-do" shelf. This first one will be something of a practice build to help fine-tune the contest project. A separate thread will likely pop up when the toil begins.

Excellent mate :-clap

I cover all the panel lining at the back of the airoplane because i think they are over sized and out of scale and rescribed new ones. ;)

From my side work on Bf 109E Instrument board...

Great updates from you both!
Here is the Zvezda engine built-up in its original form. So far this consists of sixteen out-of-the-box parts. Further progress on this will be on the separate thread when this project takes shape.

Yes, the panel line molding on the Zvezda kit is very subtle. It's really beautiful in most respects.

I was getting ready to put the F back into its box for later building. I decided to dry-fit the cockpit parts before I put it away. Here are three photos:

Very good basic interior :)
-
Good. ;)
-
The worst flaw that I've seen in this kit so far is the little ejection pin mark in the center of the seat. This would be a fun model to enter into a contest in the "Out-Of-Box" category.
Now it is back on the shelf for the near future--the Eduard Emil review must come first.
-
Instrument board completed :))

Wow, that is great! I'm saving that image for reference!!!
-
Hey... thank you :-ok :))

I found this at a discounted price......and now add it to the pile:
I was a little disappointed when I opened the box to find the exact same parts as their earlier G6. I was hoping that UM would have included the cowling and fuselage parts to build an AS powered machine as well as the larger wheel fairings for the wings. It'll still build into a nice airplane regardless. And, the decal sheet provides Croatian markings! :-tri

I have developed a rather strong headache this evening looking at photos and built models of Bf-109G-10 White 11, Rosemarie. I've got an idea to build this machine, but the issue I am having is the Luftflotte 4 yellow identification markings. From the original photo I've seen it appears to me (my opinion, only) that the rudder is yellow but no cowling band (as shown on most models) is evident. Any help on this would be appreciated. I've got your profile, No.1, and find this to be very near the same idea that I have with only the rudder being different.
Thanks in advance!

Pressing on with some painting, even though my shop temperature all afternoon was 43 C!!!!! :-wall :-eek :-danger First some preshading and then the RLM 76 for the underside. Perhaps some top colors will be sprayed tomorrow regardless of the heat.

Great work mate, now to solve situation with machine you mention :)
-
My today's play with last Eduard set, some skill needed to build them all in Hasegawaa kit. Interesting- I will use old Hasegawa decals and will make kit flown by Gerhard Barkhorn, top German ace.
-
This is beautiful! Such small PE items and of the usual quality.
How old is that Hasegawa sheet? I've bought a few pre-owned 1980s vintage Hasegawa and Tamiya kits recently and the decals are reduced to junk. No way to even begin to save them. I suspect the former owner stored these in a very hot place, maybe even too humid or damp. Yours look in great shape!
-
Great work mate, now to solve situation with machine you mention :)
I sent images in an email, No.1.

Cool!! :-clap :-ok

All right, I get it and will reply some later :)

Here are photos of my rendition of Rosemarie, a Bf 109G-10. The airplane was flown into captivity at the end of the war and remained intact for at least a while before being destroyed. An interesting feature of this particular airplane is the ETC 50 bomb rack. A photo of the airplane and smiling pilot shows what definitely seems to be the multiple bomb rack on the belly and so I added an Airfix rack from the spares bin.

The decals are spares bin refugees and a Monogram sheet that came with a G-10. The fuselage insignia have been masked and sprayed with dark green over the black portions. The Monogram/Revell spinner swirl has been soaked in Microsol several times but is still wrinkled up. This may be stripped and redone if further soaking doesn't fix it.... :-wall

Back to my Zvezda F2 practice kit, today working on the wings and landing gear bays:
-
Nice job. ;)
-
:-ok
-
I must say that this Zvezda F is every bit the equal of the new Eduard E insofar as the fit of parts is concerned. Everything that has been dry-fitted has been so near perfect it is amazing. Today was RLM02 and 66 day on small parts and final assembly of the wing.
-
Good. ;)
-
Work on the cooling system here. Both radiators and oil cooler are very nicely detailed and the ducts are also well engineered. I've decided to drop the flaps and radiator outlets on this kit so a small modification was done to each radiator housing by scribing the outlet flaps and repositioning them.
-
It look great from this view :-ok
-
Cockpit and fuselage joining day. The Zvezda F is joined by another Jumo example:
-
Pleasure to watch this build :)
-
Here are the cowling sections all assembled. This part of the project will be a little tricky since I'm not installing any of the engine parts. Like the Eduard Emil, the engine is used to align everything on the nose of the airplane. A bit of scratchbuilding should give me the support I need.
-
It look it is build to be with open engine
-
Yes, open cowling is easy on this kit. The manufacturer molded the upper cowling halves quite thin I should mention, so that either closed or open configuration can be built.
-
Great work, Scott!!!
-
Further progress on this Freidrich, and I still can't get over the fit. I've used a very tiny bit of filler on the wing leading edge seams, oil tank cowling, and on the right side of the gun cover (caused by my error in assembly, not Zvezda's fault). Every other seam is designed to be in exactly the same place as a panel line on the real machine and the fit is so close and perfect! The parts fit so well that the cowl parts could be painted as sub-assemblies. Next will be to glue all these bits together just before gluing them to the firewall of the fuselage. Note also that I've installed a drop-tank mount that I harvested from the Eduard Bf 109E. Both the mount and tank are beautiful and they'll be a nice addition to this model.
Then the horizontal stabilizers and wing were installed and theatre band painted.
-
I am impressed with details and look of the kit :-ok
-
I forgot to mention that I've added the tropical intake filter from an old Fujimi or Otaki kit from my spares bin. Also I modified the wheel openings to the round shape used on the F-4 and added some panel lines to the upper wing surfaces.
This is my first Zvezda kit and I place it very high on ease of construction even though it is complete with engine, guns, etc.
-
:-ok
-
Look great mate!!! :-clap
-
RLM 79 spray-day.......:
Next will be to build up the "power-egg" cowling section, then glosscote.
-
:-ok
-
:-clap :-ok
-
I didn't know Zvezda's Bf-109 kit, I like it a lot!! It has many detailed parts that don't have others kits.
Great job!! I follow you!!
-
Yes, it is a fantastic kit, and it is relatively inexpensive. This one I'm building now cost less than $20.00 U.S. from Squadron Mail Order during a sale last year. I really should have bought several just for the detail parts!
There was rumor that Zvezda was going to continue on with the Gustav series and I'd certainly welcome more variants if they release them.
-
:-ok
-
Here are a couple of examples of the extra parts that come with the Zvezda kit. First is two complete sets of exhaust stacks. The painted set are designed to be used when the cowling is fitted. The extra set is for a bare engine. The second photo is of the two tailwheel strut assemblies. One is to be used if the gear is down, the other is for retracted.
Also some decal progress was made late last week:
-
Good details and precise molds :)
-
Look very good!! :-clap
-
Final assembly completed and here is the finished product. The only additions to this were the home-made seatbelt harness, spares box tropical filter, and the Eduard drop tank and pylon. The only modification was to drop the radiator outlet flaps. Decals are mostly from the kit sheet with a couple from the decal spares box.
The model depicted here is a Bf 109F4 Trop of 6./JG27. It was being flown by Lt. Gerhard Mix and he was forced to belly land behind British lines in August of 1942 where he and the airplane were captured in the vicinity of El Alamein. The photos taken by the British shows that the airplane looked nearly new and that the engine had siezed during flight.

My hat is off to Zvezda for this beautiful kit. Along with the new Eduard Emil I can say I've now built two of the best 109 kits available today. Now that this practice kit is under my belt I'll be able to start on the detailed project with confidence. I highly recommend building this to anyone wanting a "modern" Bf-109 kit in 1/48.

Beauty :-ok
-
Thanks, mate. It was such an enjoyable build, too. Next one will have the engine with it, also.
For some time I've been contemplating a "kitbash" late-model Messerschmitt. I love the G-10 variant but the old Monogram/Revell kit only gives the large wing wheel-bulges and short tailwheel. The Hobbycraft/Academy K-4 offers the option of the large fairings or the smaller kidney-shaped bulges. I've wondered for a while how hard it would be to swap the wings. As it turns out, not hard at all! :-tri I just purchased an old Hobbycraft Kurfurst for just this reason. The wings fit from one to another PERFECTLY, with the only work being to use a small amount of filler at the wing root and under the fuselage, which would have to be done on the stock kit anyway. I don't know if the Hobbycraft moldmaker used a Monogram G-10 as a pattern, but the wings are completely interchangeable. This opens up a large number of other choices for builders of late-model Gs and Ks. Also, I've got a lead on a Hasegawa K-4 and will do the same test-fitting on it if and when I get it. Kitbashing is fun when the parts fit, and these two kits are relatively inexpensive in the bargain! :-jump :-jump :-jump

Wonderful!! :-clap :-clap
Go ahead!! :-clap

Army of Bf 109... :)) :))
-
Hi mates,
Second Air Force, very nice to see a finished model!! Congrats!! Also, I find very helpful what you do on -109 late models. As you say, it can be great to fill out that "gap" mixing parts to get some G-10 variants.
Well, I keep following your updates!!
-
Great works gentlemen, and my respect to Zveda for its kit. :-ok
-
Thanks to all for following this thread, and my new obsession!
I knew when I first started researching the Bf-109 that the collection was going to expand out of control........yet all the builds I've done so far are what I might call "therapy" and pure relaxation for me. The contest-quality (I hope) Zvezda F will come along this winter I reckon.
Here's a wing production line photo. On the left, Academy K, green Monogram G-10, and the one with filler is a UM G-14. I've been working on these during lunch time only so it will be a while until things come together. Of course, the G-10 wing will be used to build a K and vice-versa.
If anyone here has built an ICM kit you'll be familiar with the UM product. It has some flash (easily removed) and the fit is a little bit fiddly. Other than the tires and wheels it'll be a nice build with just a bit more work than we're becoming accustomed to.
-
Great scene my friend :-ok And thank you for sharing experience ;)
-
:-clap :-clap
-
:-ok
-
Cockpits built-up, fuselage halves joined, then wing installation on the G-10, G-14, and K-4. The wing swap on the Monogram and Hobbycraft kits was very painless with only a little filing and filler.
I've even decided on paint schemes for two of the three! ;)
-
Ha ha ha- what a build spirit :-clap
-
They're like eating popcorn or peanuts--I can't stop now that I've started!!!!!! :-jump :-jump :-jump
-
Ha ha- I know that feeling :))
-
Nice squadron! ;)
-
:-clap :-clap Look great! :-clap
-
One more added to this effort, the Ha-1112. Why not add a fourth? :-crazy :-dal :-blah
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/IMG_0669.jpg)
Incidentally, the Hispano kit probably has the best fit of all the Hobbycraft/Academy Bf 109s I've put together. The panel lines are a bit faint but the basic kit goes together nicely.
-
:-clap :-eek
-
And I have few more kits to continue :))
-
Hi mates,
Wow man, you are a building scale model machine!! I am learning a lot, of course enjoying too. One day, I want to do my BF-109 colletion from A to Z (literally) :-ok :-clap :-clap
-
These are really a form of therapy for me, Memitus! I'd been away from aircraft scale modeling for a long number of years so there are many "new" kits, decals, accessories, etc. of the '109 for me to explore. After I repaired the first two old builds at the beginning of this thread the obsession was firmly established.

Some pre-shading, painting, and priming has been done on these. Doing four at a time has gotten a little confusing....... :-roll
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/IMG_0680.jpg)
-
:-ok :-clap
-
Camouflage on :-clap
-
Yep, camouflage schemes are being sprayed. The G-10 and K-4 are far enough along that decals are being applied now and the Buchon and G-14 are waiting for top colors. I decided to split these into two pairs in order to keep my mind straight for the painting.
-
:-ok :-clap
-
Very nice progress mate!! :-clap I love your enthusiasm!! :-ok :-clap
-
I've been under the weather with a :-danger sinus/headcold/???? :-danger for a few days and haven't really felt like working on these. In between sneezing and coughing the Hispano started to take shape last night since my energy level is returning.... I'm using the old Hobbycraft decals that came with the kit even after being told they would be unusable. A moderate overcoat of clear lacquer and they work alright! They are a bit translucent so I used white decal under the roundels.
-
It look so interesting with Spanish markings :-ok
-
I agree, and there are a fair number of interesting markings choices for these Hispanos. The next one I build will be in the overall blue of the Escuadron 71 unit that fought in the Ifni War.
-
It look so interesting with Spanish markings :-ok
I agree!! :-clap
-
Camouflage on the G-14, the first one of these I've constructed. Decals soon....... ;)

:-ok :-clap
-
Look so nice :-ok :-clap
-
Three of the four builds on my desk are now in the display case. First, the Hispano machine in markings it carried in the early 1960s. This airplane is virtually out-of-box except for the seatbelts, a couple of spares box cannon barrels, and a little detailing in the cockpit. Even the decals are all from the Hobbycraft sheet. Unfortunately, the constructor's information that should be on the vertical fin was not included on the decals and I'll have to source them later.

Excellent job! :-clap :-clap I like it !!! :-clap :-clap
-
Hi mate,
Very nice. One of four finished, great!! Curiously, Buchon's streamline is rare for me, it brokes original cowling shape. But it is interested for me at the same time....................
I like what you do!! I can't wait for seeing 3 last....... :-ok
-
Yes, when they fitted the Merlin they came up with an interesting cowling shape. We used to have a Buchon in the hangar where I did warbird maintenance and I really admired the metalsmithing of the cowlings.
It's really quite amazing how small the real airplane (and especially the cockpit) is when you are around one.
-
It had been a great experience for you!! Knowing the real subject!!
-
Yes, it was a neat little fighter but I never took any detail photos of it. :-wall :-wall At the time I thought it would always be sitting there to study but it was sold to a British warbird operator. The good thing of it is that the airplane is airworthy again after years of static display in the States. :-ok
Here are a few photos of the G-10 from this quartet. This is W.Nr. 130368 of II./NJ 11 at the end of the war in Europe:

Thanks, friends. :-flo
Here's the third machine, a Bf-109K-4 assigned to III./JG 27 in April of 1945. I tasked Ellen (my lovely wife of 30 years) with picking out the scheme for this one and she picked this from an Aeromaster sheet. It's quite similar to the first K I built, but this was her selection:
This and the all-blue G-10 are the hybrid kitbash of Monogram/Revell and Hobbycraft/Academy kits. After working with both of them I am pretty certain that Hobbycraft copied the Monogram kit in many respects. The wings are almost a perfect match from one to the other as is the prop. It certainly made the intermixing of parts quite easy!
-
Really great work mate :-ok
-
Ohoohoho,attack of Bf-109!!! :))
Great, great, great job!! :-clap :-clap I don't know which of these i better... ;) :-clap And cool markings!
-
The final model of this Schwarm is now complete, the UM Models G-14 in late-war Croatian scheme. More photos will follow when lighting conditions allow.

Some more photos of the Croat G-14:

This is, as mentioned earlier, built from a UM kit. This is probably the most challenging of the various Bf-109s from all the different manufacturers that I've built so far. The transparencies are somewhat cloudy and it isn't the easiest kit to assemble. With that being said, it still makes into a nice representation of the Messerschmitt. On the plus side it has two different drop tank styles, underwing gun gondolas, and a complete engine.
-
Beautiful! :-clap
-
It's time to step back from the SAAB project for a little while. One can only scratchbuild stuff for so long before relaxation is needed.
To relax, why not a couple of '109s? The Gustav is an Otaki kit (I paid U.S. $2.95 for this the other day) and the Emil is another Airfix. Both of these will be virtually out-of-the box except for brake lines and seatbelts. I'm not even opening the canopy on the G.
The G will be in Regia Aeronautica colors and the E in a desert JG 27 scheme.
-
Hahaha- you really have spirit :-ok
-
I love building both of these kits and doing them out-of-box will take my mind off the SAAB for a little while.
-
Ohohohoh,great! :-clap :-clap
-
Cockpits finished and fuselage halves joined. I did break down and add masking-tape seatbelt harnesses to both seats.
-
Two at one time :))
-
It's easier than four! These kits both fit so nicely that they are really relaxing.
A bit of filler and primer on fuselage seams as needed and then the wings were mounted this morning:
-
:-ok Soon you will get sample of new publication and this would be very interesting for you :))
-
Scott,
A pleasure seeing your work. As soon as I finish my Dewoitine, I'll re-take my Bf-109V-4 and -C (Classic Airframes and Hobbycraft). I have been with many things to do daily, and I just have seen forum post, not no have time to reply.
I hope I see them finish!!
-
Thanks, all!
It'll be a while before I can finish either of these as I'm going to be busy with other projects for the near future. I promise to get back to them in ten days or so.....
I should mention--this Emil kit is the third Airfix E I've built, and this one has four rather deep sink marks in the fuselage halves. They aren't hard to fill, but such marks were not evident on the first two kits I built. It doesn't affect how nicely the parts fit, though.
-
:-ok
-
I've found some small time to begin the painting of these two, first by applying theatre markings and then masking these before camouflage:
Also the small parts such as landing gear, wheels, and propellers were sprayed in the same session.
-
Nice job! :-clap
-
Thanks, Sall.
Here is the underside camouflage, with the E on the left in RLM 78 and the G in RLM 76.

My friend... it is absolute great work!
-
Very nice work mate! :-clap :-clap
-
Messershmitt Werke, isn't it? For sure, great seeing your work!!
-
Must re join this party soon!!!!!
-
Nice and relaxing to build these.....the time (and coffee) slip by so quietly!
-
Both of these are finished now. I was somewhat disappointed with my decal application on the Italian machine. The decals aren't to fault, though (I think) as I've used Sky Decal products before without silvering. So, here is the Bf 109G-6 as flown by ace Mario Bellagambi in 1943:
The Airfix E-7 is finished in the rather famous "Schwarz 8" scheme of JG 27. These decals came from the Eduard Royal Class Emil decal sheet. This was the scheme Ellen wanted me to use on the Eduard review kit but I talked her into the Jabo scheme then:

So great, so nice!! Two excellent Bf-109's on your collection and two less on the stash!!
-
I see no problem with decals and build are soooo good!!!
-
Great kits mate!! :-clap :-clap
-
It's time to fill in another of the blank spaces in my Messerschmitt collection, the Czech Avia S-199. I found an old Hobbycraft S-199 and could not resist it. I'll build this one with the Israeli markings that come in the kit, and in future will build a Czech marked machine, too. The kit is typical of the Hobbycraft kits and shares many parts with the German manufactured G/K. The fuselage, prop, etc. are all different reflecting the Jumo powerplant and cowlings.
-
Great mate- you will have now full range of type :-ok
-
Maybe next should be the two-seaters? :-think
-
They are so rare and many variations is possible :)
-
Yep, Messerschmitt, Avia, and Hispano all built the two seaters so there could be a great number of them! I must start casting about for a conversion kit one of these days. :-think :-paper
-
Hohohohoho,great!! :-clap :-tri
-
Here is S-199 D-108 of 101 Squadron. This was another fun, relaxing build, basically from the box with the exception of some Otaki main gear tires and resin tailwheel. The kit decals went on quite nicely, also!

Nice fresh delivery machine :))
-
Yes, while doing research for this it was mentioned that the airplanes were in a semi-gloss finish when delivered to Israel. I modeled this, one of the early ones, in the fresh finish just after having the squadron emblem applied to the cowlings. Later they had the red spinner and striped rudder added, but I wanted to do a "new" machine for this first one.
-
One more great build mate!! :-clap :-clap
-
The Israeli machine is the 24th '109 since I started down this "Messerschmitt Road"!
-
Crazy!!! :-clap :-tri :-obey
-
And three more in primer--a C, G-10 and K-4........ :-dal :-smey :-blah :)) :-jump
-
:-clap :-ok
-
Small progress on the G-10. The left and right fuselage fairings on the Revell kit both have the curved shape that you see on the first photo. This particular model will be depicting an Erla-built machine with the rectangular fairing on the left side. This was built up from tapered styrene sheet and filler, the rough beginnings shown in the second photo:
-
This is it!!! I just wait a moment to see that kind build here :-ok
-
Hi everyone,
Here you are my last build : a Bf 109 K-4 from Erla-Leipzig. The original kit is the 1/48 Revell's issued in... 1978 !
The upper surface are entirely in RLM 81 and the unsersurfaces of the wings are unpainted except the ailerons which were fabrix covered and then painted in RLM 65 (This color xas always used by sub-contractors and recommanded for fabrics). Regarding the kit itself, the engine cowlings must be improved and the diameter of the propeller must be lenthened to 62,5 mm (3 000 mm for the real thing).

Hi everybody,
A special version of the Bf 109 : the Bf 109 V31 involved in the Me 209/309 programm by testing the large track undercarriage of both and the nex belly oil cooler (retractable) of the Me 309. Both projects were abandonned because of the birth of a more promising project, the Me 262 jet fighter...
I used the Bf 109 F in 1/48 scale from Airfix.

Project is great mate!
-
I like this very, very much, Jicehem! The conversion is very well executed.
A question--is there any place one could purchase the generic letters for factory fuselage codes? I've got a number of potential project airplanes that only lack the Stammkenzeichen.
Also, here are the three '109s currently in work here:

I feel like I am in Regensburg :)) How many Bf 109 are built here :))

I found no letters for Skz in any shop via internet... It's a pity. All letters decal sheets from Microscale, Scalemaster or others are out of stock and it seems they will never be reissued...
It's a friend of mine who printed the letters on a clear decal film. Personnally I don't know how to operate a printing machine fot that work...
Jicehem :-wave :-wave :-wave
-
Thanks, mate--I've looked across the internet also without results.
I don't know how to set up to print decals like this either. I have no problem cutting the straight letters from decal sheet, but I will have problems with the constant curves of C, S, O, etc. Something will come up, I reckon. I do have a copy of the font style used by the Luftwaffe so there should be a way!
-
Silk print is one of option, can be made good

A pleasure to see your Bf-109's werke!! Great, simply great
-
Numbers are of use ;) I have something too, must dig it out and put on download...
-
Bf-109D W.Nr. 2674 of an unidentified (to me, at least) Jagdfliegerschule unit. A couple of good photos of the real airplane belly-landed in a meadow inspired me to build this one. One of my favorite parts of WWII avaition is the training of pilots and aircrew, and this is my Luftwaffe trainer.

This is another kitbash of a Hobbycraft B/C with resin firewall forward and a few other resin bits. The camouflage is somewhat typical of refurbished Jumo machines and even a couple of color photos of these can be found, in what appears to be 02/70/65 colors. Perhaps the 70 could be 71, but the photo of #45 shows the green to be quite dark.
-
Very good work mate, very good work :-ok Subject is so interesting, trainer Bf 109 is not everyday subject :)
-
Very good rendering. Bravo !
On official OS-Liste the camo scheme is in RLM 70/02 colors (fall 1939-Summer 1940) for the Bf 109 E. Before that period colors were 70/71. Your Bf 109 D has been repainted before delivering to a training unit.
Jicehem :-wave :-wave :-wave
-
Wonderful!! :-clap :-clap
I like it a looooooooot!! :-clap :-obey

Yes, and I found the wavy camouflage demarkation line interesting. The few photos I have of the training machines shows that the painters at the overhaul facilities were rather lenient with the patterns.
I need to mention that this airplane should have the extended exhaust stacks as most C and D versions had them. I used a "rejected" resin cowling for this project and it is actually for the earlier B. I may correct this later but wanted to finish the model to make desk space.

Okay, today I received in the mailbox this GREAT sheet of Luftwaffe letters and numerals from Fantasy Printshop. This opens up many projects I've been wanting to do, especially with regard to newly delivered fighters and training aircraft. These sheets are listed in 1/72 scale only, but easily can be scaled up for 1/48. The sheets I ordered will work well on my 1/48 fighters and other smaller aircraft.

My order was filled rapidly and shipped across the Atlantic with speed. Here's their website--give these folks some business if you're in the need for their products! http://www.fantasyprintshop.co.uk/

Good material and I guess there will be good kits to come :))

Here is the latest K in a different camouflage than usually seen. The decals are from Aeromaster and the airplane is another kitbash of a Revell G-10 wing on an Academy K fuselage as I've done before.

Okay, my desk is back to normal--there is a 109 on it. This one will be a late C variant and the main purpose of this one is to test the new Skz. letters I recently acquired.
First was to whack off the entire firewall forward of a Hobbycraft C/D kit. Then I poured a new resin cowling set and fitted it to the fuselage, all the same as I've shown on earlier Jumo kits:
The particular airplane I'm building had an exhaust system very similar to the Emil. This modification was done later in Jumo airframe production and represents the third style of exhaust on these early birds. First was the flush openings as shown on this cowl, then individual round tubes extending out from the cowl a bit, and lastly the streamlined design. I simply found a suitable exhaust/fairing assembly in my spares and made an RTV mold, then cast it in resin.

Consider this more of a product review rather than a model update:
After finishing the camouflage and gloss clearcoat, I got down to the purpose of this machine, the use of Fantasy Printshop Skz decals.
Now the review--these decals are FANTASTIC! Not only are they crisply printed, the carrier film has no "bridge" film between the legs of the letters and numerals. A dip in water and they slide beautifully onto the surface, conforming with ease.
I highly recommend this product of Fantasy Printshop!

I'll be here!
I'm thinking of starting the V-1 modifications fairly soon, probably in January.

This was found on ebay last week and I decided to make a bid. It came home at very low cost.
The kit was advertised as having been started by an accomplished modeler, and this was correct. When I unpacked the parts it was very evident that the first person to start this kit is very talented. The cockpit is finished very nicely with PE harnesses and the main assembly is quite clean. The canopy frames are very carefully masked (still in place) and painted. Also the gear and prop are already finished to a high standard:
My only regret is that I don't know who the builder was. In any event, I will finish this project for the first owner in a way that I hope he/she would be happy with!
-
I inspected the entire "pre-built" model tonight and found little wrong with it. The underside RLM 76 is exactly as the former owner sprayed it:
I only added two tiny areas of filler on the top seams and then sanded them. Next the pre-masked canopy parts were tacked on and the top surfaces are nearly ready for paint:
A paint scheme has been decided on and decals are being hunted for in the spares box. In theory, this could be finished tomorrow!
-
:-ok
-
Fast :))
-
Very fast!!!! :-clap
-
My paint scheme fell through as I was confusing an Erla G-10 with a WNF machine. So, I have now settled on a new scheme that will demand a little extra work. Not a great problem, though and it lets me build yet another variation. So, back into decal spares........
-
Okay, now I've finalized which airplane to do. So today I installed new tip and needle in the airbrush (both originals have been damaged by clumsy handling on my part over the years) and took up the challenge of fine mottling on the sides of this machine. The real airplane had a very dense mottle and this gave me an excellent chance to practice mottling with the rebuilt airbrush before I start on the Me 262.

-
Excellent work on spots on fuselage :-ok
-
Really great job on camouflage mate!! :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you friends. Rebuilding the airbrush tip/needle makes it much easier to control the mottling. I still have a new aircap on order and this will also make for more precision.
A mention of this kit quality is in order: I have read for some time that the Hasegawa G and K are the best kits out there of late Bf 109. I must agree! Even though I didn't actually construct most of this model the panel lines and fit are just beautiful. The wheels and tires also are top-notch and the kit includes two styles of main tires and three of tailwheel.
Scott

The first finished model from my workbench wasn't actually built by me, but since I painted it and completed the first builder's work here it is, just finished an hour ago. This is a Bf 109G-10/R2 that was photographed by an American serviceman after the end of the war. The decals are a mixture of Hasegawa kid items, Academy national markings, Superscale swastikas, and some very old numerals from the spares box. Something about the very plain markings of this Recce machine and the very dense mottling on the fuselage sides attracted me to it.

For the second 109 of 2013 I've decided to assemble this Hasegawa E-3. This is the first issue of the Hasegawa Emil and is somewhat less attractive than later kits. There are a few shape and panel line issues with the fuselage and cowling. These were corrected in later issues of the E from Hasegawa. I found this model in the "second-hand" area of the hobby shop without a box, decals, the transparent fret, and the small PE fret that originally came with it. For only a few dollars I thought I should build this, so here it goes.......pretty straightforward build and the parts fit quite nicely. The cockpit could use some extra detailing, but it does have the principal elements in there:
The canopy parts will come from the spares bin and decals from Eduard Royal Class sheet.
-
Cheap solution and will be good in your hands :)
-
I get a chance to use up some extra parts, too! The windscreen and opening section are from UM, back part of canopy from Airfix, gunsight from Eduard, wheels and tires from Hobbycraft, bomb rack and bomb from Airfix, decals from Eduard and so on.......
I must mention that it would seem Hobbycraft used one of these Hasegawa E kits to "help" engineer their early Bf 109 variant kits. Much of this seems VERY familiar..... :-think :-eek
-
Good for you mate :-ok
-
Hohoho, great! :-clap :-tri
-
Small update on this Emil, soon to be a Jagdbomber. The first thing on the agenda was to fix the landing gear oleos. This kit, and its Hobbycraft/Academy B/C/D/E siblings, molds the moving portion of the landing gear leg in the same diameter as the upper strut. If you're building a very early airplane you can simulate the fabric covers that were installed, but these were deleted usually. So, to fix this problem, I simply cut the oleos off with a razor saw and used appropriately-sized aluminum tubing to make new lower struts. The nice part is that you can paint the strut assembly first, then add the nice, shiny aluminum and your strut is complete!

It was a nice day so the painting commenced also:

Here is the finished first-issue Hasegawa E, in the markings of W.Nr. 3605 (Bf 109E4/B) of 8./JG77 in summer of 1941. This aircraft was flown by Ofw. Reinhold Schmetzer and was belly landed after successful combat with a MiG-3 on 20 July. The airplane was field-painted in overall black-green over the original 02/71/65. The cowl gun panels are obviously replacements as they are still in the original scheme. The majority of the decals and information above are courtesy of the Eduard Royal Class decal sheet and instructions.

Thanks to ample spare parts this was built for little less than $6.00 U.S.
-
One more great, great work!! :-clap :-clap
What is next my friend?? :)) :-tri
-
I should stop with these 109s for a while. More time needs to be spent on the SAAB 17, Tiger I and Me 262. Building these nearly out-of-box is so relaxing though!!!!
-
That's ok!! :-flo
-
:-ok :-clap :-clap
-
Well, I couldn't stay away from another 109-build...... This one is a G-6AS and I'm using the Fujimi "universal" kit. A really nice kit with many options.
The main reason for working on this now is to experiment with a new camouflage masking method that I plan to use on the Me 262. More on this tomorrow if time permits.
-
I knew it!!! :))
Go forward my friend!! :-clap :-tri
-
:) :-cool :-jump You know me too well, Sall! I couldn't stay away from here.......
So, as I mentioned, the excuse for building this one was to learn a new method of masking the camouflage demarkation lines. I want a slightly blended line for the Me 262V-3 project but freehand airbrushing would give too wide of a blend line. I modified an old method of masking and tried it on this G-6AS. The method is explained on the Some Modeling Techniques sticky.
Here are a few pictures of this project with the results of my experiment:

Good :))

:-clap :-ok
-
Since the wing is effectively finished I carried on with the fuselage.
I really like this Fujimi G. The fit is quite good and the cockpit gives about the same detail as some of the other manufacturers. It could really do with a little extra from a PE or resin kit, but for a shelf-display model it looks fine. The best part of this kit is that so many of the various panels are represented. All of the servicing panels that moved around during production are represented. It is fairly simple to properly research which panels were in use on the airplane you are building and fill the access panel lines you don't need:
-
I am glad you take attention of all of its access panels ;)
-
I have read reviews of this kit and a few builders didn't like having to fill the "extra" panels and doors. Personally I would rather fill the molded-in lines rather than have to scribe new ones on my own. I forgot to mention also that the wing lower surfaces have mounting points already open for the Wfr.Gr. 21 rockets that I had to fill for my machine.
-
Basic fuselage painting is now complete. Next step will be to join the wing and fuselage together. I don't often paint before putting all the main elements together, but this is a painting test-bed.
-
:-ok
-
This look great! :-clap Hope there will be no problems with join lines... ;) :-ok
-
No problems with the join lines at all--the Fujimi engineers made a great kit! The only filler will be where the trailing edge of the center section meets the fuselage on the bottom. The lower fuselage will be painted after joining anyway so this will all work together.
-
Glad to hear that. :-ok
-
Interesting detail of the content of the access panel on fuselage port side on K version ;)
-
Not much model-building at my house for the past couple of weeks due to the flu. The G-6AS slowly has seen some work done, though:

And this UM G-6 is slowly taking shape as well:
-
Good job my friend! :-clap
-
Hope you are good now :-ok
-
Better, not 100% yet.......
-
The UM G-6 is shaping up now, but it does require a bit more work than some of the other kits. The wing-to-fuselage joints are all in need of filing and trimming to get a better fit, and more filler is required on this one.
The "other" project, a G-6AS, is finally finished. It represents one of the many aircraft flown by night-fighter expert Friedrich-Karl Muller ("Nasenmuller"--a favorite nickname I've always enjoyed). This machine was used by Muller in the July-August 1944 timeframe when he was fighting in 1./NjGr 10. The rudder carries 23 victory markings. His 24th was the only Mosquito that he claimed during the War but it isn't known if he achieved that feat in this 109 or another machine.

This Fujimi kit went together beautifully with no problems at all! The decals are mostly from the spares box and the numerals were cut from decal material to get the correct colors.
-
Scheme is very interesting and work is great :-ok
-
Thanks friend!
For twenty years I've been thinking about building one of Muller's airplanes, after I first read a book about the night war between the RAF and Luftwaffe. These free-lance Wilde Sau pilots get a lot of respect in my opinion--night and instrument flying in a 109 or 190 would be demanding enough without chasing enemy bombers all over the sky!
-
One more great great work from your side Scott!!! :-clap :-clap
Go forward, we wait next Bf-109!! :)) :-tri
-
The UM G-6 was moving along well enough that I decided to build the Hasegawa F-4 also. This kit goes together wonderfully with no fit problems whatsoever. I spent only a couple of hours and it was ready for paint!
-
Just couple of hours is not much, I like when things going smooth and fast ;)
-
So......this morning I woke up, drank some coffee, and then started a little painting on the G and F. Well, the airbrush was acting odd and I decided to stop and fully clean it internally. After the cleaning was done, I started to spray and, guess what? I put my thumb (with lacquer thinner on it) on the fuselage and this was the result: :-wall :-dal :-red :-roll :-wch
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/IMG_1366_zps065729fc.jpg)
Testors enamel doesn't care for lacquer thinner!
After mumbling to myself and more coffee I fixed the damage and continued painting. Eventually this was the result:
And the Friedrich in its Eastern Front colors:

Can not see images :(
-
Glad you solve problem Scott!! :-ok
And both kits looks great!! :-clap :-clap
-
Thanks, Sall. :-flo Lightly wet-sanding the bad area with 2000 grit sandpaper was enough to smooth and feather-edge the damage. It isn't the dumbest thing I have ever done, but it wasn't very smart!
No.1, I'll repost the photos here to see if they become visible for you. Notice, too, in the damage photo, how poor the RLM 74 was applied. This was because the airbrush was dirty internally and had restricted flow, and the operator kept trying to paint when he should have stopped. :-wall

Soory, again problem with visibility :( Did anybody else have similar problem?
How odd...... I'll delete all three images from Photobucket and re-load them, then add them to the earlier post. Let me know if they're visible then.
-
I see no image to regret, even on your earl post... ??? Did anybody else see images or only I have problem?
-
Well- problem is on my side :( Will see what to do.
-
I'll take a couple more photos and post them to see for certain that the problem doesn't lie within Photobucket.
-
On the pictures you posted the first time I see the small Photobucket boxes with the "Image has been moved or deleted" message but I see the second round of pictures ok.
Looks like the fingerprint dressed up just fine! Here's my last big mistake, should make you feel better.
About this time two years ago I was dealing with the son of an orignal owner/restorer of one of the Wildcats that came out of Lake Michigan in the 90's. I actually bought a cylinder off of him that came off the engine after it had sat under water for 60 years. I built a model of the Wildcat and display it on the cylinder, and this gentleman helped me greatly with information about the plane and restoration. He was a previous warbird owner himself so I built a T-6 for him in the same markings as one that he had bought from the South African government and had restored. I was on a self imposed small time frame because I had a baby on the way and wanted to get it done before she was here.
After a few days of masking and painting all the colors I hit it with the first coat of Testor's Gloss Cote. I sat the can down and worked on fixing a small run and then noticed an area that was dry and didn't get any clear coat. I quickly grabbed what I thought was the clear coat can and sprayed the model again, only to find I had grabbed a can of Floquil silver which has the same color label. I tried to wipe it off but it was too late.
-
Good grief! That is a hard one to deal with! :-wall :-wall
I replaced the pictures on the earlier thread.
-
Must sa that build look so interesting :-ok

Here's the old Hasegawa Bf 109 F-4, finished in Walter Nowotny's JG 54 RLM 70/71/76 splinter scheme. The decals are a combination of Hasegawa kit decals and some Superscale items. Other than that, it's right out of the box except for a couple of small cockpit details:
And the G-6 that I botched the paint job on. This was flown by Major Franz Beyer, Gruppenkommadeur of IV/JG 3. This airplane was based in Italy in August of 1943. The decals are from a Superscale sheet. The kit is primarily from the UM box with extra cockpit enhancement, Otaki main wheels and WGr 21 rocket tubes, and a Monogram tailwheel.

Two beautiful kits mate! :-clap :-clap
-
Great work!!!
-
I like them both :-ok
-
Next on my list is another Academy kit, this one a G-14. I won't bore you with the normal build-up of this other than to mention that Academy designed this to be either a G-6 or G-14 with either the original style or later tall tail. To build the tall-tail version you must cut both fuselage halves off at a molded-in line on them. Then fit the new tail halves and a little putty is needed.
I'm still undecided on paint scheme but there are so many for the G-14 series!
-
Keep on rolling mate :-ok
-
I like it, it will be fantastic with happy colors :))
-
Go forward mate!! :-tri :-clap
-
A size comparison of the Bf 109 and Tempest--what a monster the RAF had there! :-eek

Nice one mate ;)
-
Good!
-
Thanks, y'all!
Today I ordered a G-12 conversion set! :-jump I've been wanting to build a two-seater for years....... ;)
-
This will be great project, rare to see ;)
-
:-clap :-ok
-
Here is a sneak-peek of my new Falcon G-12 kit:
The plastic and white-metal parts are molded much like an LTD short-run kit with large molding stubs but the cockpit detail looks pretty nice. With some cleanup and proper preparation this won't be too bad to construct. The main draw for me was the decal sheet and canopy parts. There are decals for several trainers and both the flat-topped and curved roof canopy sections are included. My plan is to build one model with what you see here and use the left-over canopy and decals to convert a Hasegawa kit into a two seater. My spares box will also come into play for some of the detail parts, I reckon.
-
This will be great project!!!
-
New one!! :-clap :-tri

Here is the Academy G-14 in the colors of II/JG27 in the late summer of 1944. A color photo exists of a line of JG27 machines with Yellow 2 in the foreground. Yellow 5 is the next airplane in line and this is the airplane I selected. The decals are a combination of kit decals from Academy, Zvezda and other sources, including the fuselage crosses of the old Fujimi decal sheet that Nico sent me a while back. Thanks for the decal sheet, mate--they are already in use!

A couple more photos with the tree-backdrop. It was too windy the other day to shoot these--the airplanes were trying to fly!

I may stay away from 109s for a short while to renew my energy for them. The two-seater may be the next one, but not right away.
-
Great :-ok :-clap
-
:-clap :-ok
-
Really a great build!
-
Lets warm up the atmosphere with this interesting files :))
-
Few more :)) And what was decision about the machine from Spain with splinted camouflage on wings?
-
More images for inspiration! Take a look at last one, it have splinter pattern for colors RLM 70 and 71 but used colors are RLM 02 and 71 :-clap This is one of the great subject to do!
-
Nice photos, thank you!
-
You are welcome :)) It would be great if we see any of them as plastic kit here ;)
-
Once I feel better (a second round of the flu is going around here, and I have it) I've got a couple of these picked out to build.
-
Flu again... :(

nO 109 for me for the time being... But other interresting stuff in preparation! ;)

Time to show the progress on this Avia S-199 variant in the original Czech colors:
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/IMG_2020_zps16fa2557.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/IMG_2020_zps16fa2557.jpg.html)
It's straightforward building as per the other Hobbycraft Bf 109s we've seen here, so a photo of the current state:
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/IMG_2045_zpsf5a3d545.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/IMG_2045_zpsf5a3d545.jpg.html)
-
This CSR colors are actually German... I will send some valuable files soon, don't go into camouflage ;)
-
Too late on a few areas for camo, but not so far that I can't correct it later if need be!
-
Here are a few photos of the finished Avia S-199 in my favorite scheme! In the first photo I realized that I was building two Avia projects at the same time without even planning it.......
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/IMG_2084_zps69bb8eec.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/IMG_2084_zps69bb8eec.jpg.html)
Then a few of the completed model:
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/IMG_2086_zps0a9479ef.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/IMG_2086_zps0a9479ef.jpg.html)
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/IMG_2099_zpse2cdc35e.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/IMG_2099_zpse2cdc35e.jpg.html)
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/IMG_2096_zps2adfa934.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/IMG_2096_zps2adfa934.jpg.html)
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/IMG_2094_zpse8c501c4.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/IMG_2094_zpse8c501c4.jpg.html)
This was built pretty much straight from the box with the exception of the sliding canopy. I used a Squadron vacuform canopy as the kit part won't sit on the fuselage properly when opened. The decals are all directly from the Hobbycraft sheet with just a couple from the spares box. Not much of any weathering or stains on this one--the photos used as reference showed a very clean, well maintained airplane, a credit to the ground crews!
-
Beautiful work mate :-ok

:-ok

It seems I must keep at least one Bf 109 on the bench....... This is another of my favorite Airfix Emils and will be in a very plain paint scheme when finished.

sweet..

Little time available right now, but the camouflage colors were sprayed today:

Nice work anyway :))

Well, because I am so clumsy I have had to buy a new camera. I dropped my trusty old one and destroyed the lens mechanism. :-wall :-wall :-wall :-roll Otherwise I would have posted a few photos of this airplane sooner.

As stated before, this is the Airfix Emil and the decal sheet is from a quite old Aviation USK sheet that came in a group of decals I purchased a while back.
-
Camera work perfect and model build is great!
-
A secret---those were the last images I took with the old camera. I dropped it just after taking these and just swapped the memory card into the new unit. I'm still trying to learn the new one's operation......
-
I don't know what amount you have but you can buy excellent (for us) Nikon camera with Nikkor lenses up to 250€
-
:-ok for the kit.
Hope you will be satisfied with the new camera...
-
Thanks fellows!
I purchased a Canon camera as I have always had them, both film and digital. I have broken a couple of them by my own stupidity and clumsiness but they always have been very dependable. The new one is giving me the normal "learning curve" problems to work through but it does look like it will be a good machine once it trains me to use it!
-
Very nice work on the Airfix kit.
-
One more 109 to end the year 2013 and usher in the next one! This Emil and the 108 were companions when I purchased them so I reckon they can be companions on the workbench.....

Here is the Academy G-14 in the colors of II/JG27 in the late summer of 1944. A color photo exists of a line of JG27 machines with Yellow 2 in the foreground. Yellow 5 is the next airplane in line and this is the airplane I selected.
Hello ! :-salut
Unfortunately, "gelbe 5" of II./JG 27 is a Bf 109 G-6/AS... not a G-14. Sorry.
Jicehem :-wave
-
Thanks, Jicehem! I don't know how I missed that detail back when this model was built...... :-wall :-eek :-red
But, that gives me a chance to correct the error! :-tri
First a bit of disassembly:
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/SAC001_zpse47a1ba4.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/SAC001_zpse47a1ba4.jpg.html)
Then some strong clear tape applied:
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/SAC002_zpscdd5ce73.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/2AF/media/SAC002_zpscdd5ce73.jpg.html)
-
Did not know that technique... Useful!
-
Yes, I used Scotch tape in this instance. If the decals are even more stubborn, the clear packaging tape (for binding boxes etc.) has even stronger adhesive but it lifts paint sometimes! This one had only flat clear varnish over the decals so they came away pretty easily.
-

Scratchbuilding is very satisfying!!!
Great progress on this one!

Thank you very much guys!!! :-salut :-salut :-salut :-salut

Fine work!

I've finished "updating" this late G in new markings. For those who may not know, Jicehem pointed out that I'd incorrectly painted this one. :-red I either needed to update the cowling or change markings. Obviously the latter is easier! Also, I had been wanting this new scheme on my shelf anyway....... Here's the original build--JC pointed out the photo of this airplane and it has the smoother bulged cowling of a G-6AS.

It was pretty easy to update this with some extra camo and new recognition markings. In fact, I did it pretty much the same way as the ground crews did it--simply painted over the Luftwaffe markings and applied the new ones! ;) The Romanian roundels and numerals came from my spares box, as usual.

And, I still have the decals to do the original Yellow 5, but I'll apply them to the correct kit next time! :-ok

I like it, great update mate!

:-ok

WOW!
Very nice!:))

Here is the first "new-build" of 2014 for me, the Airfix Emil that is so familiar to me. This one is out-of-box except for brake lines. The Croatian coat of arms and red 2s are from the same Aviation USK sheet as my earlier Royal Yugoslavian Bf 109E and the other decals came from the Airfix sheet and spares box. This one represents a machine of 15.(Kroat)/JG52. These had the factory paint oversprayed in the field with RLM 75 overall and 74 squiggling.

I reckon it is time to add another build to this thread six months later...... :-wise
This is the Revell G-10 premium edition I picked up recently, more for the decal sheet than the actual kit. However, I didn't see any reason to waste the plastic parts and I felt the need to relax on a familiar project. This one will be in WNF Diana camouflage when finished.

1/48 scale?
-
Hi mate, :-salut :-salut
Yes, 1/48 scale. I built a lot of them modified in different versions. It's a good base but to perfection the engine-cowlings must be improved.
Jicehem :-wave :-wave

I am sure that build will be top one ;)

Hello ! :-salut :-salut
Here are my Revell-based G-10s and K-4s. They are all old builds apart from the Erla's K-4 which was built in August 2012.
1) Genuine Revell kit without modifications. It's a WNF model of II./JG 52 :

Hi Second Air Force, :-salut :-salut
Have you a Hs 123 in the making ?

Your Airfix Bf 109 E is splendid. Bravo !
I find something strange in the shape of the nose...

Well, I didn't think it would be this long between updates......but here is a quick painting update. The principal colors are now sprayed and next will be the fuselage mottling, probably to be completed this weekend:

Welcome to workbench mate :))
-
Hello,
Just a remark upon this build (which is amazing) :
When the flaps are totally "down" i.e. 42°, both ailerons are 11° down. Generally, slats were open. This system has been abandonned only from the Bf 109 F onwards.
Jicehem :-wave
-
Yes, in this instance I decided to have the stick to a left-wing-down position, so the right aileron is far down and left just slightly up, this should be close to the 11 degree droop considering the stick position.
-
OK.
Jicehem :-wave

It's been a rather long summer, but I finally got this little machine built. It represents (from a Wings Palette profile, sadly I have no actual photo to confirm the machine) a Czech operated G-10 from the WNF Diana plant. The profile mentions that this airplane was on display after the war, whether it ever flew in these marks I cannot say. So......I reckon this might be a "might-have-been" scheme but I still found it quite attractive and it's a nice addition to my Messerschmitt fleet. The decals are from an ICM Spitfire sheet and the kit is stock Monogram/Revell G-10.

Possibly not very accurate, but a good exercise to get my mind back on the modeling bench!
-
Nice work and yes, there is image :))
-
I should have asked you earlier, thanks for this image!!!!!
Now I have some considerable reworking to do on this one.......
-
I am afraid... hope this will not cause much problems. Note that it have over spray at wing bottom in RLM 75 paint
-
No problem at all, No.1. Neither Jicehem or I had a photo of this one and I simply should have asked you or Nico also.... :-wall I reckon this is a good example of completing the research before applying paint or decals. It'll be fairly easy to fix at any rate. I'm just happy to see your photo and thanks for having it!
Now, the photo adds a question--the person who painted the Czech lozenge on the fuselage oriented it "incorrectly" it seems, as I thought the white third of the roundel was always on the top and aft, with blue segment forward. The Wings Palette profile is the same as the photo. Still, I will set about repairing and making mine accurate when I dig up some more roundels.
Thanks, No.1, for this important (to me, anyway) photo! :-ok
-
If the painter mirrored markings, this will make your kit more sensual and attractive ;)
-
Good thing is, also, that I can simply strip off the roundels on the fuselage and the rest can be done with the airbrush. I'll go through my decals and hopefully have a couple more roundels that will serve for the "update".
-
You are so skilled and you can do anything you want :))
-
Close to a year since any action on this thread but I think this build fits here better than a new thread. This is the old Hobbycraft Bf 109E kit that I got as a package deal with a Jumo-engined kit and another Emil. I had not built the Hobbycraft E before this and it is not the best kit on the market by a long way. The cockpit is pretty much identical with the B/C/D kits I've shown before and building this is quite the same as the Jumo machines. The decals were leftover spares-box items, mostly from the Hobbycraft line and I decided to build this as a factory-new machine just delivered to the Swiss. It's just a practice kit for my own curiosity, so don't look too closely!

:-ok

A quick update on this thread--I've taken a start on the second Hobbycraft Emil in my stash and it will (obviously) be a nightfighter with Owl Decals markings:

-
Hahaha- I know you will not resist for a long time :)
-
Yep, and I wanted to try this sheet from Owl as I also have a Bf 110 and Ju 88 to build using their products!
-
This will look nice
-
Hello, :-salut
Pretty work.
Pay attention. I think that this particular Bf 109 E-7 had an additional streamlined homing device on the underside of the aft fuselage, more exactly between the numeral 9 and the Balkenkreuz (seen from the left side). Letter J was red, outline in white (as seen on close-uo photos).
Jicehem :-wave
-
Yes, I've built my own scanner that will be added at the end.
I've been a little disappointed that the decal sheet missed the red J, but it will not be hard to correct with a little work.
-
Final touches on this one, and a short review of the Owl decals. These markings went on well with a little silvering under the clear portion of the national markings. This surprised me since the gloss finish was so smooth, but a little setting solution fixed the issue.

Beautiful one!!!
-
Splendid!
-
Hello,
Splendid. The black color rendering is well done.
Cheers,
Jicehem :-wave
-
beautiful !
-
I'm too lazy to start a new thread on this '109 since I didn't take any in progress photos, so I'll fit it into our old GB.
Recently I re-read an excellent book on JG 26 and I decided to build a Gustav flown by Klaus Meitusch. The airplane here was flown occasionally by Meitusch when he was Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG 26. The kit is the old Hasegawa G-6 built out of the box but with a canopy from my spares box. Decals were sourced mostly from my extra sheets.
-
Nice subject which bring new life to old topic ;)
-
:-ok
-
excellent !
-
I'm going to revive this thread once again to post another variant--the first prototype.
I'm using a spare engine half from my old 1/72 S-3 kit that also provided the radiator bath for the Bf110B. The rocker box fairings on top are Eduard bombs from the Emil series. The kit is an old Academy/Hobbycraft one.
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Excellent!
-
Lots of filler on this one! The hardest part was fairing in the rocker box fairings and took a lot of sanding/filling/sanding/filling/beer drinking! All the characteristic panel lines on the aft fuselage of a normal Bf 109 were filled too since the prototype had smooth sides.
On the wings the prototype had bulges on top to clear the tires, much as the later model G and K types. I used a set of spare bulges from the parts box and modified them to make them a little smaller.
-
This will result in such a beauty :-love
-
It reminds me of an early P-40 in a collision with a Messerschmitt!
-
Primer, sanding, filling, primer, drinking more beer......!
-
Beer section is best ;)
-
...And better with a Belgian one :-))
-
Sadly, I only had U.S. in the refrigerator....... And what I have is co-owned with a Molson in Canada, so all on our side of the pond!
I'm still sanding etcetera and keep finding new flaws each time.
-
Cockpit installed, wings joined. Now time to apply filler to the gaps on fuselage/wing joints and I'll finish the canopy parts. I'm using modified clear parts from the Zvezda Freidrich kit which provides early rounded pieces that are very close to what I need here.
-
Its look like it have nice join lines, not much filler need
-
They could be better, on a couple of these old Hobbycraft kits I didn't need filler between the wings and fuselage on top. This one isn't molded quite as good, maybe it is of the later series with a little mold shift.
-
You have some extra work but it doesn't seems to difficult, this will be a nice kit mate !
-
Good work!
-
Thanks!
This one has gotten moved to the back of the line temporarily....but I intend to come back to it soon.
-
Shiny grey paint has finally found it's way onto the V1.....
-
Look so interesting in this paint!!
-
:-ok
-
The prototype is now ready to place on display. Now that it's complete it felt right to photograph the very first Bf 109 with one of its last siblings. Hard to believe this one design could stay in production for so many years!
-
Wonderful work and great subject in collection :-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Excellent work Scott, well done!
-
Thanks, my friends!
Now that I've finished this first prototype I probably have at least one airplane from every important variation with the exception of the H. Someday I'll do a "family photo".
-
Great !
-
To add the "last" German-built version to the V-1 "first" version, I finished assembling this Hasegawa K that has been partially built for a year or so. I really like building the Hasegawa 109s and I wish they weren't so expensive! (relatively speaking)
-
:-clap :-clap :-clap
-
Thank you!
-
Splendid! Well done ;-)
-
Looks great !
