Title: Belgian Mirage 5 (Wingman 1/48)
Post by: draken35 on February 02, 2019, 07:14:46 PM
Wingman Models boxed the Kinetic Mirage IIIE with resin parts and decal sheet for Belgian Mirages 5BA/5BR.
The resin parts are nice but will ask for attention when removing from the carrots : some corrections will be needed.  The 1700L subsonic reservoirs presents lots of little bubbles in the resin at the top of the part, surrounding the fixation to the wing. That will ask for minutious work… Those reservoirs are in two elements ; assembly was OK but a little bit of putty is needed at the junction of the parts.
Decals are made with the help of DACO. DACO is producing many decals for Belgian aircrafts
Actually I don’t know if I will use the decal sheet of the box or the specail Mirage 5 decal sheet (also made by DACO)…
My documentation consists in two excellent books…

I plan to build a Mirage 5BR late version. Trying the fitting pf the clear part in the nose, I constated that the clear part is too large end deforms the plastic cover. So I have cut the clear part into three elements; that's better so doing the cover is not deformed...

The interior of the camera cover is painted in black ; same for the other little windows

Black for effect or interior was real black?

Interior was black. More than that if you look at photos of the 5BR, all the cameras  windows seem To be black

The nose looks OK now. I have to repaint in glossy black all the windows. I've put miliput in the interior; that will give some weight and more than that, that will avoid the fact that in the building process some windows to fall out of their emplacement.

For the fuel tanks, I completed the putty with cyano at some locations. Sanding done. But the attachment system to the wing don't fit; I will have to use evergereen and probably miliput too...

I've also looked how the resin "BA" nose would fit: poorly, really poorly... It is a little bit too big...

Actually I'm a little bit deceived by the kit...

One detail- did you clean up this resin with acetone first, then go with filler?

I cleaned the resin with wash soap...

You can make a great glass effect with Vallejo still water. It equalize itself by gravity and you will have perfect glass effect. I use it before for periscopes on AFV models

The 1700L fuel tanks received putty again for some gaps... There are asking for a long work!
I've also sanded the recce nose to equalize the camera door with the nose. Sounds better; but I have to use some Vallejo putty for the junction that is not pleasant actually.
Prudence asks me to prepare a "plan B" so I'm also working on the attack version nose (BA). Again, resin is not perfect and there were some little gaps to fill with Tamiya White Putty...
"Patience et longueur de temps..." (Patience and lot of time spent...)

Well,  it's possible but those noses can be Nice- but are asking for lot of work...

After three times using cyano/putty and then sanding, the fuel tanks look a little bit better!
Another big problem with the kit: the resin instrument panel for the Belgain version is not correct (central part of the panel). So I've cut one of the instrument panels furnished with the Kinetic kit; cut the central part; sanded the central part of the resin part and then glued the plastic element.

Well, I really don't want to use "plan B"; so I came back on the recce nose again! I've used Vallejo putty to reduce the jointure between the windows door and the nose. Look better now.

So, the detail set from Scaleworx landed today at home...
I need that set for the arrester hook: the one of the Mirage IIIDZ is similar to the one of the Mirage 5 (the one of the kit and the resin replacement part are not correct for Belgian Mirages).
Since the time I put the kit on the shelve, I've carefully examinated the recce nose and I'm definitively unhappy with that part... I think I will finally build a Mirage 5 BA...

My friend Pascal (who is building a 1/1 Kiebitz...) convinced me to give a last try to the recce version; using miliput to correct all the defaults of the nose.
Why not???
Still in progress...

Mr Surfacer 500 is used for the fuel tanks. For what concerns the BR nose, things look good enough now. Next phase will be to delimit the windows with masking tape and then to airbrush black paint

That f.cking recce nose asked for lot and lot of work... But primer reveals the truth: the interpanel between the canera door and the nose is perfect!
So, now I can affirm definitively that I will build the Mirage 5BR  :-love

Next phase: to try to obtain good result on the fuel tanks: I have to sand the putty put on the last holes...

Slowly restarting the work...

I've placed the Scaleworx part for Mirage III CZ (but also correct for Belgian Mirage 5). Not fitting perfectly; I've tried to correct the part but broked it... Not a real problem; all is in place now; It just needed a little bit of putty (AK gray putty used).
I've also used Vallejo putty and, like for the 1/72 PJ kit, added a louve (made from sprue and evergreen) on the left side of the fuselage.
