Title: Riboy (a "naked" horse)
Post by: draken35 on March 24, 2013, 01:44:18 PM
As you know, a friend of mine owns horses. I have painted for her figures of her two first ones, but the new one was to be made too of course!

As he is a young horse, I have had to wait until his colors will be fixed. It's time now. Just waiting for good weather and good light to take some photos to help to paint, but I can actually prepare the figure  ;)

Figure (bought during the Ransart expo end of january in Belgium) is from JMD Création, France. Very nice and expressive, but resin contains some bubbles on the horseback and defaults that have to be fixed with putty.

My actual work: sanding; castration (argh...); reinforcement of the parts with metal before gluing; putty; preparation of the base and two photos of the horse on the base, to let my friend to choose if she want the horse looking to the left or to the right.

Next step: sanding of putty; not before next week...

Miliput sanded. I just added Mr Surfacer 500 around the neck for little corrections.

A first primer (white) was airbrushed, to help to reveal the remaining defaults (unsufficient sanding; holes; mold lines, etc).
Then after corrections, a second primer is airbrushed. All is OK now.
Figure is placed on a temprary base (to help to manipulate the figure); the places of the feet are marked on the definitive base.

Maskol applied to protect the surfaces that will be painted in white. Another primer (sand) will be airbrushed on the horse

Burnt umber + black; and gloss varnish on the eyes...
We are very close to the real colors. Now I have to paint the hairs (that are definitively black...)

Draken, you hava done great painting job,but eyes look unnatural.keep in mind that we dont paint them like humans. And I will explain why.Horses pupil is bigger regarding the eyeball,so it doesnt leave showing any white spots besides. Its rather gloss black or dark brown if you see some regerence pics.

Images are great bit is it Draken horse a too small to achieve this effects as on images? Just thoughts, I am not experienced in figure painting :(
Title: Re: Riboy (a "naked" horse)
Post by: draken35 on May 19, 2013, 10:18:40 PM
Thank you Zetman. Of course it's possible to make a correction, but Riboy is a dark horse, with dark eyes and in this case, more white in the eyes gives more intensity... That's why, even if I fully agree that you're right, I will not modify the eyes.
But once again, thank you; your intervention is really helpful for the future (because I will paint other horses)
Title: Re: Riboy (a "naked" horse)
Post by: draken35 on May 26, 2013, 04:23:15 PM
Well...

...I was not convinced to be correct with my painting. I showed Riboy to my friend and she said me the figure have to be darker. OK, no problem but I prefer to remove all the paint and to restart on a clean base...

Removing the paint:
- first, white spirit to remove oil paint
- secondly, methanol to remove acrylic base

In the process, little reparation made with putty...
