This is a wonderful thread! We've driven VW products for over twenty years and my goal has always been to own a Kubelwagen someday. I once missed a chance to buy a fairly complete 1942 Kubel by four hours........ It ended up being nicely restored by a collector in Oregon or Idaho.

Would anyone like to see my wartime Kafer project? It is a combination of a 1/16th scale Revell sedan and the excellent Tamiya Kubel. It hasn't seen the light of day for several years......like all my projects!

About VW: I have a 1996 model Polo.
Not as a model but as the real car.
It's my second Polo; I owned the previous old model over 1988-1996.
Don't know when I am going to chance present Polo for a new model.
It still runs perfectly and it is completely without rust; even after fifteen years//

We drive a '98 Jetta GLX with 294,000 miles on it (our "new" car ) and a '91 GTI with 270,000 miles. Both run great and we have spent next-to-nothing on repairs other than regular maintenance. We've had a number of Kafers, Transporters, and Karmann Ghias also and every one has been a good vehicle. The air-cooled ones are fun to work on as well!

Here is my wartime VW project, a Type 82E KDF sedan.

Kubelwagen

The body, part of the pan, and parts of the interior are from the old 1/16th Revell Beetle kit. The axles, engine, wheels and other parts are resin copies, most with modifications, from the Tamiya Kubelwagen. A lot of the small detail parts are scratchbuilt. The hardest part of this project so far has been engineering the hinges for the doors and forward and rear hoods. I've got a lot of experience with real VWs and had to tap into that knowledge to get the hinges figured out for the engine lid.

Thanks for the interest. The Revell kit is of a 1952 Deluxe sedan and I had to do a LOT of modifying to get rid of the civilian features on the body and interior. The chrome trim on the sides of the body are especially a pain to work with as the kit has a groove in the body for the trim to fit into that must be filled. Having the Tamiya Kubel to pick over for parts was a great development.

When I started this project there wasn't a lot to choose from. The 1/16th Kubelwagen kit came out about two years after I had started the sedan. I was overjoyed when I heard of the Kubel as it provided me with a large amount of parts.
