Title: Lancia Delta Integrale - Italeri 1/24
Post by: Profa on August 13, 2009, 08:25:11 PM
Well, this one goes a little off-board that regards airplanes, but... we'll come back to that :)

Story of Lancia Delta begins in 1979, when Giorgetto Giugiaro designed first factory model. In 1986 Lancia produced first 4WD, with turbo-charger and engine that gave out 165 BHP. Later it evolved to the final version, Evoluzione II, with 215 BHP :-ok
A short list of achievements: 6 consecutive World Rally Championships from 1987 to 1992, with 46 WRC victories, bringing Juha Kankkunen and Massimo Biasion to the WRC podium...
Now, this was a road car (the most beautiful one, me thinks :))), but under some circumstances it could as weel fly, which allows her to join this board :-ok
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/reference/th_airbig.gif) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/reference/airbig.gif)(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/reference/th_Lancia-Delta_1990.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/reference/Lancia-Delta_1990.jpg)

Off to the kit: this one is classic Italeri, alas lacking engine and brakes detail, and with lots of flash and mould seams everywhere... :-/ This got me into some serious sanding before even touching paints or glue... :-wall They have also made some errors in painting instructions, but there is plenty of reference pictures on the web - that shouldn't be a problem. On the positive side: decals are beautiful, and I'll consider this a OOB build, without much bothering...
Box and parts pictures:

To the actual paint&building job: I've painted everything that should be matt black Vallejo 70950, which is really dead flat:
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_01.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_01.jpg)(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_02.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_02.jpg)(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_03.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_03.jpg)

Other parts (all brush painted, of course ;)):

For the grille mesh I'm going to use fine cloth... Had to cut through the ribs, BTW :-wall:

Seats are painted and had recieved decals:

Now, this is way out of my usual work (which is, as you're already familiar, 1/72 military airplanes), and so is full of my firsts - first car model, first airbrush work...
Wait a minute - first AB work?!? :-roll one might wonder...
Yes, I've found that no way I could do that beautiful paintjob using my bare hands and my faithful companion through all these years - Winsor & Newton No.1 :-dal... Therefore I had to ask for help from someone who does have that ... that thing called airbrush.... :-wall
Luckily I have this guy in the neighborhood, and he has something called Aztec xyz... :-dal
OK, it has the handle, it is made for paintjobs... But, there are some differences called air pressure, double-action, nitro... :-dal Strange world indeed... Huh, I'll get acquainted, if I have to... :-roll

First thing was preparation for painting of "small parts" - fenders, door, hood:
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_16.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_16.jpg)(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_17.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_17.jpg)

Now this is really rare occasion seeing me actually using AB:
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Ja_i_AB_02.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Ja_i_AB_02.jpg)(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Ja_i_AB_06.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Ja_i_AB_06.jpg)

I've laid coat of white primer, and it showed there's still a lots of sanding to be done :-/
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_18.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_18.jpg)(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_20.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_20.jpg)(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_21.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_21.jpg)(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_22.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_22.jpg)

After sanding it looked like this:
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_23.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_23.jpg)(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_24.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_24.jpg)

Off to the paintshop it went... After some fight with the AB I have used my hand to it and am very pleased with the results. Unfortunatelly yet have to pick pics of it...

While the body is drying in the paintshop I took some time off my regular work to do some work on chasis and interior detail and to put it all together:
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_25.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_25.jpg)(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_26.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_26.jpg)(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_27.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_27.jpg)(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_28.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_28.jpg)(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_29.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_29.jpg)

Had made myself one nasty cut on the thumb while setting it  :-wall - "always look after your fingers while using Olfa!", my old Paps used to say... Now have to cool down a little, but I'll continue on Monday (anyway going to spend a weekend with my family :))... :-wave

Well, not too happy how it came out, especially because of my missunderstanding with the AB :-wall
Nevertheless, here are pictures of the current state:

Off to decals we go... :) After that I'll coat it with another layer of clear gloss, make some sanding corrections... Hope to come out OK at the end... :-wave

Decals gave me lots of rough time, so at one moment I've simply put the lot back into the box and continued work on other projects, trying to forget all the troubles...
Somewhere in February I've pulled it back onto the table and now, armed with patience, finished positioning of decals... Then cracks had to be painted, followed with another gloss coat and smooth polishing. Now everything was prepared for final assembly:
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_39.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_39.jpg)(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_40.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_40.jpg)(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_41.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_41.jpg)(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_42.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_42.jpg)

I've tried and tried, but joining chassis to the bodywork was as problematic as setting the decals... And again it was sent to the box, this time missing trash bin by mere inches... I was really :-kr, and again have to cool down... :-paper

That looks like it'll be a very nice model when you finish, Profa! I'm glad someone has posted a racing car on the forum so I can slip in this entry. :-clap

I'm not the fastest as I've explained earlier. The black and silver car was started in 1999 and the Target car in 2001. They've been in the boxes since then. :-roll
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w117/2AF/IMG_6765.jpg)

My reasoning for posting these two old projects on LLL is that Kyle Petty (black car) has a pilot's license and Sterling Marlin (red car) used to own a business jet. :)

I once finished a Winston Cup model down to the Dayglo orange paint. I destroyed it trying to paint that stuff and I DID send the body to the trash receptacle!!! I confess it felt good to do it, too. :-ok Since then I learned how to spray Dayglo, and I was able to keep the finished chassis for a different project.

Huh... after last time fussiness todays' session was all about patience and ease... :-bat
Therefore I've established point of trouble - glass is too thick, so interior side didn't fit well, which in turn caused it to collide with dashboards' end:
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_43a.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_43a.jpg)
Here you could see scratches made by trying to fit everything previous time:
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_44a.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_44a.jpg)
Now, off to the filing I went (using the roughest file I have), and after some dryfitting and more filing, it set as good as it could... After that everything went smooth, and here we are:
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/th_Delta_45.jpg) (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa189/jaka013/projekti/IT_Lancia_Delta/Delta_45.jpg)

Bearing for rear right wheel had to be scratchbuilt, since I've lost one two years ago... For this I used sprue filed to outer diameter and drilled to inner. Now just a touch of paint, and it's going to be like original one...
