Title: KV-1 (Tamiya 1/48)
Post by: draken35 on December 26, 2010, 05:38:34 PM
This is my first try to a tank at 1/48th scale; so I've decided to build it "out of the box"...

The build was really an easy one

There is one thing I modified: the nylon that was censed to represent the cable! I used Karaya tow cable
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/KV05.jpg)

I also used a little bit of Vallejo putty

The tracks asked for a long work: the ejection marks were numerous and too visible.
I used my "home" filler: plastic sprue put into liquid glue...

First paint stage
(http://users.skynet.be/bk320910/KV10.JPG)

...But I was not satisfied with the green color indicated by Tamiya. So a second paint stage was needed.

This time I used Tamiya XF-65 with a little bit of XF-62. Result is better for my taste.

I will continue the work after february...

Very interesting! Did anybody make BT?

At 1/48th scale, I don't know if there are kits of the BT's...

I made the lightening with Tamiya pastels:

I must say I like the result...

A little progress on that kit I must say 1/48th scale is a scale I like very much for AFV's...

Progress as the time allow ;) Details is nice and it seems that it is near to be complete?

Thank you, mates!

Srecko, the KV-1 is not really near to completion: I have to:
- varnish (gloss)
- make a "glacis" (technique that permits to give nuances in the paint, to simulate effects of UV by example)
- niew varnish (gloss)
- decals
- varnish again (gloss)
- oil wash
- matt varnish
- weathering with pastels; color with talc, and perheaps some acrylic powders from Mig Productions...
- Plus the base, but I'm not sure yet to make a decor or not...

Well... my knowledge about armor modeling is definitely poor :(

You'll have to excuse my ignorance, Draken35, but will the tracks be fairly easily built up? Even with all the ejector pin marks they are a great improvement over the vinyl tracks in the last armor kit I built. Having the droop built in is so nice.......

I've been watching the 1/48th scale armor releases for a while now. I built a couple of Tamiya Jeeps many years ago and even they have very good detail. If Tamiya releases a Chevy bomb truck I'll be ordering one!!!!!

Great work,
Scott

Hi Scott,

The tracks are coming is some big elements, other more little and some are individuals. Positioning of all of them is clearly explained on the instruction sheet; and the barbotin is not glued to permit eventual adjustement of the tracks. I think there will be no problem at all mounting those tracks and, like you, I find there are far better than vinyl ones.

I hope that in the future Tamiya will release some modern tanks at 1/48th scale...

Thanks for the tutorial. I'm getting in the mood to purchase some 1/48 armor kits.

P.S.
I'd love to see Tamiya do a BT in this scale also........ :-wave

Yesterday I've airbrushed Pebeo Gloss varnish on the kit:

Then, today, it was the wash phase:

First, some dots of oil paints (I've used medium green, dark brown, white, yellow and red)

Next step is the use of a paintbrush with turpentine. The paintbrush is used always in the same direction; that gives some nuances in the basic paint that reproduces effects of weather, sun, etc...

The wash is made with "Wash Brown" from "Abteilung 501"; I've also glued the tracks.

Years ago I was helping judge an IPMS Regional contest here in the States and a co-judge said that armor wasn't all that hard to paint :-eek. The rest of us set him straight as best we could, but it would do that fellow good to see all the steps you're doing to make this KV look realistic. Maybe then he'd understand!

Thank you mates!

What to say about the building and painting of a tank? Well... It's just different from an aircraft, but not so simple if you wish your build will not be considered as a toy...

After the KV-1, I will build a 1/35 Staghound. The work was begun and you'll see that it's not really a piece of cake.

If you remember the begin of my painting phase, I used some Tamiya pigments.

But, due to the use of varnish, those pigments simply disappeared... OK, I'm always learning, now I know that it's a phase to do later...

...Like just now, just before weathering...
