The BAC TSR-2 was an ill-fated cold war strike aircraft developed by the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) for the RAF in the early 1960s
The TSR-2 was designed to penetrate a well-defended forward battle area at low altitudes and very high speeds, and then attack high-value targets in the rear with close-in bomb runs and precision drops. The TSR-2 included a number of advanced features that made it the highest performing aircraft in this role, yet the program was controversially cancelled in favor of the General Dynamics F-111 instead, a procurement that itself was later cancelled. My own views, this was one of the biggest mistakes the British Government at time made, this aircraft was so advanced I feel it could have taken on any role and been the top of the class. I also feel that there was pressure from the US to buy the F111 so this would then give them some form of control over the RAF and the Government.
I have seen the aircraft at Cosford and Duxford and in even in this day and age, I still get the feeling that this aircraft with it's great design could still play a part in any Airforce. It still has a true following in the country, long after it died.
