F-35 Engines Reordered, Design Fix Implemented
« on: December 23, 2014, 03:55:12 PM »
Pratt & Whitney scored a Pentagon contract for the seventh lot of 30 F135 engines for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program — which followed revelation of the cause of an engine fire in June. The latter was the result of "prolonged rubbing" in the stator section that heated the titanium rotor, cracking a seal that then caused the rotor to fail. Fielded and production engines are being modified accordingly, but controversy remains regarding why such a flaw was not caught earlier.

New engine and new airframe are always an unlucky combination to start with!
