RAF Marham Tornado Wing
« on: August 12, 2006, 02:56:13 PM »
Here a a few of the images I have of the RAF GR4 Tornados based at RAF Marham

First image is a shot of an aircraft from each of the Squadrons, II(AC), 9,13 & 31 Sqn.
The second one is a line up of the aircraft on the flight line.
Number three is a 13 Sqn aircaft on take-off at dust.
and last is a 31 Sqn Tornado again on take-off.

If anyone wishes to see anymore, please let me know and I will post them.

I wish they were, the images are from the photographic section on the Unit, they are the lucky ones who get to sit in the back seat of the GR4 and do all the air to air shots.

Must said that they are good that much that I have think that you have made it. Many of you image could be taken as a sample of photography art.

If anyone is interested, there are drawings of all three of the Tornados whose nose art is above, in the book 'Operation Telic: RAF Jets in Iraqi Freedom', by Andy Evans and Jon Freeman, published recently by Model Alliance in the UK. The same company produces decals for BABS, Dallas Dhu and Truffle Snufflers, in addition to several more of the Operation Telic aircraft. They are excellent decals.

I have one specific question- all of this planes are painted in the well prepared and equiped facilities and in special condition. And how it is done- this aplication of the nose art in the terrain conditions near to the combat zone?

The art work is added after the aircraft gets to it's operational base in the 'war' zone, by military law they should not do it, but no ones stops them.
On their return to the UK, the art work is removed. I have seen one aircraft from I think II(AC) Sqn, thats 2 squadron still wearing hers.

Have a look at this RAF site about nose art Artwork

A shot taken during the Queens Visit to Marham in 2006.
The image shows aircraft from the various Squadrons on the Unit. if your eyes are good, you will see a Tornado from 617 Sqn, they are not a Marham Sqn, I do not know why they were in the line up.

Maybe it's tribute to the 617 Sqn because "When the Squadron was reformed with the Tornado it was originally based at RAF Marham, but is now located at RAF Lossiemouth..." Wiki  :-think

I did a bit of research about this, the 617Sqn aircraft was at Marham for major servicing, 3 of the 4 hangers at the Unit are used for servicing aircraft, this is undertake by BAE and not RAF engineers.
