February 23, 1939-the first flight of an experienced reconnaissance bomber BB-22.

It was developed in the Yakovlev design Bureau and was a Soviet implementation of the then popular concept of a two-engine multi-role combat aircraft. Examples are the German Messerschmitt Bf 110, French Potez 630 and Polish PZL. 38 Wilk.

When working on the "airplane 22" (internal designation KB) used developments on the project of the training bomber UT-3. The result was a light twin-engine monoplane with a two-keel tailplane and retractable landing gear. The crew consisted of 2 people. It was armed with a 1×7.62 mm ShKAS + machine gun that could carry up to 900 kg of bombs. The series was launched under the Yak-2 designation. However, the problems with flight characteristics forced them to stop production had released a total of 111 aircraft. Nevertheless, the Yak-2 successfully fought in the initial stages of the great Patriotic war.
