On may 31, 1938, senior Lieutenant Anton Gubenko (старший лейтенант Антон Губенко), for the first time in the history of Soviet aviation, successfully made an air ram (taran). While flying the I-16 fighter, he rammed a Japanese A5M2 fighter, Gubenko's I-16 propeller hit the enemy plane on the left wing Aileron, causing the A5M2 to lose control and crash to the ground. Gubenko have some 60 combat missions and seven confirmed air claims.
