November 21, 1947-first flight of the Grumman F9F Panther carrier-based fighter.
As early as 1946, Grumman participated in a us Navy competition for a jet night fighter. The Grumman G-75 project lost to the Douglas F3D Skyknight, but the developments on it were not lost. The Navy signed a contract with the company to build three prototypes, which were to eliminate the shortcomings of the G-75. So began the G-79 project, the future F9F Panther. The fighter was implemented according to the scheme of a mid-plane with a cross-shaped tail. A Pratt & Whitney J48-P-6A engine was installed, allowing speeds of up to 926 km/h. Combat radius-up to 861 km. Armament consisted of 4 × 20 mm guns and 1270 kg of payload (unguided missiles, bombs). The F9F Panther was the first Grumman jet fighter and one of the first successful carrier-based fighters of the US Navy. A total of 1,382 aircraft were produced. In addition to the United States, it was also in service with the Argentine Navy. He took an active part in the Korean war.
