At the beginning of the First World War, the Royal Navy of Great Britain acquired the liner Campania and converted it into a hydro-aircraft carrier. And Fairey Aviation has commissioned the development of new seaplanes specifically to accommodate them on this ship. They received the designation Fairey Campania.
The sesquiplane biplane with a float landing gear and underwing floats of the Campania was made mainly of wood and canvas. Depending on the modification, the engines were installed in a Rolls-Royce Eagle III/IV/V or Sunbeam Maori II. The maximum speed is up to 137 km / h. Armament — 1 × 7.7-mm machine gun + 6 × 53-kg bombs.
Fairey engineers turned out to be a reliable patrol seaplane. They produced 62 Fairey Campania samples, which were used not only from hydro-aircraft carriers, but also from coastal bases. All aircraft were written off in 1919 due to their obsolescence.
