In 1967, the year the aviation command of the United States decided to present his North Vietnamese enemy a Christmas gift. Because the Vietnamese had received from their Northern allies 16 MiG-21, the loss of the Americans during the bombing raids began to grow and they in turn decided that it would be nice to destroy the enemy regiment at full strength in one setting. For this purpose was a planned operation "Bolo", the fiddle, which was to play the 8th tactical air wing, Colonel Robin Olds, ACE of the Second world war. The idea was that 28th Olds "Phantoms" will simulate a RAID F-105 and his acting will lure the Communist air force in the duel at full strength. The F-105 was introduced to MiGs an easy target, so the Phantoms had to use their standard routes of approach to the target, to sustain the characteristic velocity and height in the open duel roll of his opponent.

And so it happened: the Vietnamese willingly fell into the trap, but on that day the battle joined only two managers out of three. The first was destroyed in full (4 aircraft shot down), the second only half, just the Vietnamese side acknowledged the loss of 6 aircraft and 1 pilot. The Americans losses were not incurred. A few days later, in the same way the Communists lost 2 of the instant, thus losing over the new year holidays half of the air force.

Since the date 2 January is the day's biggest victory of the U.S. air force in air battles of the Vietnam war.
