In 1938, the British Air Ministry announced a competition for the B. 9/38 specification. The participants had to design a twin-engine medium bomber made of inexpensive materials. Among the projects was the A. W. 41 Albemarle from Armstrong Whitworth.

It was a medium-sized plane with a two-keel tailplane. The frame of the fuselage is made of steel pipes and covered with plywood, and the wings were partially made of wood. Equipped with 2 × Bristol Hercules XI engines (1590 hp). Maximum speed-426 km / h, range-2100 km. Armament — 6 × 7.7 mm Browning machine guns + up to 1360 kg of bomb load.

The performance of the A. W. 41 Albemarle was worse than that of other medium bombers (for example, the Vickers Wellington). Therefore, it began to perform reconnaissance and transport tasks and was used to tow cargo gliders. Produced 602 A. W. 41 Albemarle aircraft.
